1997 jeep cherokee

why does my electric radiator fan continue to run after i shut off the engine, remove the key, and allow it to cool?
i have to unplug it to get it to stop.

The solenoid that controlls it is stuck in the on position? That would be a fail-safe in my book.

some cars will run the fan after the engine turns off to cool the motor. seems like a waste of power to me but thats how it is.

But, are you jumping the gun when you pull the plug?
Maybe a minute more and it would turn off by itself, as designed.

That is correct. My 87 Grand National does this. Usually runs anywhere from 10-30 seconds on a hot day only.There was a relay under the hood that once went bad and caused the fan to run all the time until the battery went dead. I've got a 2000 XJ Cherokee Limited (4.0L) but the fan never runs after shut down so there may be a relay involved as well. I'll have to dig out my trusty factory manual and check.

You've got a failed cooling fan relay on that Cherokee. Most of your e-fan circuits are supplied with constant power for the reason mentioned. The relay fails closed & the fan will run until it kills the battery.

I've noticed that once turned off, my engine temp (at the gauge) creeps up 20* during heat soak. I've never seen that much creep. I don't know about the jeeps, but I do know that many e-fan circuits are NOT ignition-switched and can run when car is off (ever see those warning stickers under the hood?). If that's the case, heat soak could raise the coolant temp, run the fan for 1-2 minutes, then shut down.

I wish my car ran the fan after shutoff, I'd like it better that way. It gets really hot under the hood after shutoff.
