Curious as to how spotless Castrol Edge keeps engines vs Mobil 1. I have used mobil 1 in several different applications and can say it does a great job at keeping engine internals spotless.

Considering EDGE 5w30 in my lexus IS250, but have never really seen or heard much evidence of it's ability to keep an engine clean to Mobil 1 standards.

No way of knowing without running it for a specific amount of miles and tearing her open and looking at the internals. I am a firm believer that it really doesn't matter what you run so long as it:

1- Meets the requirements of the manufacturer.
2- Is changed at a reasonable interval(no 70k oil changes).

A vehicle should remain clean and run well for many miles.

Yup! What he said.

Fireguy, I know you really like the RL products, how come you're not running their oil in your Lexus?

To answer your question, I think most modern oils do a good job of keeping things clean, as long as it gets changed regularly.

I haven't seen any evidence that one does better than the other so I'm going to say about the same in most real life applications

Bingo!

No idea, but of all the M1 wise cracks about iron shedding going around on this board, I don't think anyone can deny it keeps engines visually clean inside. I've yet to see an engine run many miles on M1 that wasn't spotless internally. As for actual wear, that I'm not so sure on.

The difference isn't worth the extra effort it takes to think about . Absolute cleanliness really doesn't matter in the whole picture. A little crud in the engine as you drive it to the wrecking yard because your car now valued $1679.00 needs a $3000.00 trans rebuild.

Look at their amounts of detergents and decide. Probably pretty close.

Edge leans more towards less wear as their selling point.

I'd assume with the majority that it would perform similarly. I know that Pennzoil likes to tote their cleaning ability, but again it would probably be close to the other oils.

Edge hasn't been around long enough to say with any certainty. Then again, neither have the current M1 formulations, though M1's track record is very good in this regard.

there both fine.....probally equal =
Id go as far to say Pennzoil conventional does just as well as them to.

We are using Castrol EDGE 5w30 in our 02 Toyota Avalon and it agrees with the car very well. The last analysis showed very low wear metals. Calcium content is high = good detergent action.

You stole my response!

I am agree with synthetic crazy. Toyota engine love Castrol motor oil. I have 2006 camry V6.

1st. I run castrol gtx
2nd. castrol gtx HM
3rd. castrol syntec

It is very quiet at idle, no oil consumption.. 10k OCI.

I think more depends on the engine (and PCV) as well as the driving cycle more than the minute differences in the oil, especially when they are both top grade products.

Out of those two company, i prob go with edge on toyo/lexus motor. Plus i saw from my local AZ, now castrol syntec and edge bottle says exceed GF-5 as well. Idk about mobil.

Follow the mfg OCI and you'll be fine with either. IMO Edge is the better choice though. In two applications that I used Mobil 1 oil, an 08 Jeep 0w20, and an 88 E-150 5W30, Edge is quieter in both applications, others have similar observations.

Edge was also quieter than Amsoil's 0w20, Pennzoil Platinum 5w20, SSO, and Pennzoil Platinum 5w30.
