The engine didn't seem to mind the extended interval at all. Everything was in check, still additives left in the oil to run it longer. I've switched back to GC for the summer months and warmer temps. I'll run it for 7500 miles and send it in for a analysis for comparison to Edge @ 7500 mi. So far, she seems to be quite healthy at 144k miles!

Interesting the viscosity went up for this sample compared to the last though.

For reference:
130,005 - German Castrol 0w30
135,102 - Castrol Edge 5w30
142,525 - Castrol Edge 5w30

MANN 940/25 filter

10k eh. It took me some time to go up to 7500 mi when she's had 5k changes her whole life :)

I hear ya,lol, but in time you and your oil can do it.

7,400 miles in 4 months,WOW you put the mileage on this car, you must just about live in it !

One of best runs I have seen with Edge, but I still doubt that it could go 15,000 miles, that is another 7,500 miles with only a TBN of 2.8 left. I don't see how Castrol rates this a 15,000 mile or one year oil?

Yeah, I doubt that it'll go 15k. It'll probably make it to 10k with just enough additive left. Maybe with the optimal operating conditions, no stop/go traffic, all highway miles...just maybe.

I do drive a lot, that's for sure :) 144k miles on her in under 6 years (end of August she'll turn 6).

Looks to me like it did fine. I take these extended drain claims with a grain of salt, even the king of extended drain oils. All depends on engine design, driving conditions and driver habits. I never owned a Turbo car, but drove them. I think people go a little harder on them. JMO

Wear is low for a 1.8T. I dunno about [censored] averages, this seems low.

Maybe, as a group, people who pull UOA are more oil concious, and get better results than true "average".

Here's Nate's Pennzoil Platinum used oil analysis, fyi.

Then IMO the oil did great! You got your moneys worth. Do you plan on sticking with it, and trying 10K?

No doubt Edge could go further in my Honda 2.4.

I agree. Owning a VW/Audi Turbo....I know they frickin chew up oil like crazy. This is actually an outstanding report.

I went back to GC for the summer months thinking that the Edge would be too thin for the hot temps (and plus I have a stash of it to use up). Though Nate's UOA for Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 in the summer seemed to work for him. For the cooler/winter months, I may go back to using Edge. For the samples so far, Edge and GC seem to produce the same results and GC costs less (normally and sale prices). Though, I think I saw Edge in 5 qt jugs for $25 at Walmart.

You can't compare oils with a used oil analysis based on ppm readings. Viscosity sure and TBN sure, but why waste your time and money?

Has anyone noticed the viscosity? Isn't that a bit high for Castrol EDGE 5w30?? I could be wrong but I thought it starts in the high 9's. Can it thicken up like that without being beat up?

As far as viscosity, there seems to be some variance in used oil analysis. so who knows?

Edge seemed to handle things pretty well considering it was a VW/Audi turbo. I'd be afraid to put anything less than a 40WT...

I restrict using a light oil to winter. At least the cold flow is a definite plus, especially w/turbo, while the operating viscosity requirement is more of an unknown...

I'll be doing a used oil analysis, for sure.

No problem Clark! Btw, not sure if you saw on QW but I recently bought a '06 S4 4.2L. My A4 now belongs to my friend. Since I did not know when the last service was done, I changed the oil and used Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck. I also have some T6 I want to try. Recommend going down to a 30 weight (like GC) in the 4.2?

Nickdfresh, she has seen mostly GC 0w30 her whole life (over 100k) and had no complaints with the 30 weight :)
