Just got an HHR so this cartridge stuff is all new to me...looks a lot easier and cleaner to doing a change!

Which filter do you recommend?

Wix/Napa Gold or Purolator PureOne have worked well in my 2.2 Saturn.

It is easier and cleaner, just make sure you get the filter correctly seated to the cap and that the o-ring on the cap is in good condition and dressed with a light coating of fresh oil.

Now, if I only had an oil extractor, I wouldn't have to even get on the ground anymore (at least for this car).

Where is your filter located??
I have a BMW with an extractor & it's oil change nirvana with the OF up top!

Otherwise Goose!

Depending on length of OCI multiplied by X-amount of extractions, I suspect that long OCIs - especially with dino, may see a yuck-buildup/settlement at the bottom of the oil pan.

If this occurs, then every time engine temperature gets to the normal range, skim off the top of that yuck-buildup could mix-in with the circulating oil -- then settle back down after shutdown.

Just a backyard theory of mine....

I don't intend to use it as an oil extractor ..I just got it for the parts (I do that sometimes)...but the Spectre 5971 Easy Access Oil Change Kit ..available at Amazon.com uses a banjo bolt in the drain plug. You pump from there.

The kit is currently not available ..and the price is variable. They must either produce them or import them in some number. After they sit too long ..they go down to $25+/- ..while they may start off @ $45+/-.

When I saw it @ $25 ..I bought it. The parts alone are worth much more. It has all the stuff for a remote mount too (which a canister type would have no need for ..but

)

..but assuming you extract hot, I don't see where it would be much different than a standard drain through the plug

I've been using the Pure One. I also picked up a couple AC Delcos but haven't used them yet.

Wasn't aware of the Wix filter for this car yet, but figured it was just a matter of time. More will become available as these engines get a few more years on them, I predict.

Napa Gold and GC in my daughters 04 Ion. Runs like silk and she is getting 31 mpg

The oil which is extracted is warm or hot, as suggested in any oil change, to have the gunk circulating. Therefore, you are sucking as oppose to letting gravity pull the oil out. How would u know for sure that gunk is coming out completely otherwise?

Of course, if you had that much gunk buildup, then you have biggers issues. That would be taken care of immediately with an annual UOA.

I would also say that not many ppl make it a habit to drop their oil pan to actually see one way or another.

Therefore, the UOA is the closest we have to problem identification.

& in my close to 200k on my Honda Civic Si, I've had no problems.

The Napa Gold comes with a rubber gasket or O-ring that looks like it fits in the oil filter housing cap. None of the other filters (Purolater, Fram, Supertech, STP etc) have this gasket..is it needed?

Probably will go with the Supertech...seems like it is the most well made in the group...actually looks a carbon copy of the Fram! This is one Fram filter I'd have no issues using also

I'm using the OEM AC Delco PF457G on my 2007 ION.

Bought a case from the dealer when I bought the car.

Love changing the oil on the ION. Very nice with the cartridge filter and the built in gasket on the drain plug.

How exactly do you change the cartridge? My dad's Ion has the cartridge setup as well but I don't change his oil because i'm not familiar with cartridges. I don't even know where they are

If they are all setup the same it is in a capped enclosure on the middle right (looking at the engine from the front) Takes a 1 1/4 or 32mm socket and a 1/2 inch rachet....6" extension helps also so I've been told...will be changing in next day or so

Darn, I only have a 3/8" ratchet, I have a 6" extension for it that I use for changing spark plugs, but I don't have a 1 1/4 socket or a 32mm socket either. I think the largest I have is only 17 or 18mm.
