Asking him to file a police report is the right thing to do. If he negs you, you can respond with your side of the story.

Incidentally this is why I'd never sell an expensive item online.

Exactly. The item was shipped and delivered and the OP has proof. The buyer needs to file a claim with his HO's insurance and call the Police. Has NOTHING to do with the OP unless he drove there and stole it himself. The OP should not have to give the guy 1 red cent. If E-Bay or PayPal refund the guy's money the OP should cancel both accounts and take them to court. Just ridiculous.

It is ridiculous, however if the buyer decides to trash Jimmy on EBay and destroy his rep there isn't much he can do about it. That's the reason myself and a few others suggested eating it. In reality if Jimmy doesn't care and/or can open an account under another name on continue to do business on Ebay, then let PayPal and Ebay sort it out and stand firm.

If he buyer trashes the seller under those circumstances the seller can ask E-Bay to remove the negative feedback and they will. Buyers can't lie in feedback. Seller lived up to all his obligations and has proof the item was delivered so the buyer has no grounds to post anything negative about the seller.

E-Bay has gone way over board now to the buyer's side( used to be the other way )but I don't believe negative feedback because the seller refused to refund money for a delivered item being stolen from the buyer's home would fly even with them. I would not cave on it that is for sure. Not even and risk my 100% positive rating. It is [censored].

Maybe, just maybe he can get some kind of reimbursement and it may work out OK for both of us. Given this last message he sent, I really don't think he is lying. I will help him with the insurance claim if I can.

BIG mistake. You just opened a can of worms if he can't solve it on his end. Basically you just said you would refund the money. The guy was working to get it resolved properly, through the PO, as this is not on you. You should have just kept quiet and offered nothing of the sort.

No offense meant.

EDIT - I see in a later post you said he is not going to ask you for any refund as you did your part. SAVE that message and do not delete it until you are sure this is done.

I have over 660 (559+) feedbacks...and in the past few months I got 2 buyers in NC claiming not to have gotten their package...

I sent the buyers the tracking number and copied/sent the USPS tracking documentation that the package was delivered...one filed an OPEN CASE claim and I replied to EBAY that I complied with Ebay policy/procedures and ebay said okay...END OF STORY

BTW...when filing for the insurance on paypal, the default setting is a FEE-based insurance plan...you can chose USPS insurance instead that is free for any Priority Mail valued Sometimes the fee-based option is less for items over $50...

Interesting.

I had a UK guy try to pull that exact scam on me. It would have worked, but he got the device in a mode where he needed my assistance to restore it to normal working order.

PayPal is bad news for honest sellers, imo. When a seller has to bear the risk of the loss of an item that has in fact been delivered to the delivery address, that's just beyond the pale.

Then you get the item "not as described" scam.

The cops will do absolutely nothing about stolen mail. When I called them about stolen mail, they told me it's a USPS problem (I filed a report with them and they were even more worthless than the cops) and basically told me "too bad" and tried to get me to rent one of there sleazy po boxes. I was like, are you [censored] kidding me??

Well here's a final update..About 10 days ago I sent the buyer an ebay message asking for his Paypal address so I could refund his $3.10 for the difference in shipping. He did not reply so I just mailed him $3.10 in cash last week. I figured if he did not receive it, well it was only $3.10 and at least I had tried to do the right thing.

He sent me an ebay message today saying thanks for the refund, he did receive it and he also received a complete refund from the Post Office. So all's well that ends well but it still stinks that some dirtbag wanna-be crook stole the box right off the guy's front porch in broad daylight. I learned a valuable lesson in this, anything else I ship will be shipped with a signature required, no matter what the value might be.
