Easy to see why XOM has gone all Grp III

If you dig around on the XOM web site and look at their reports on the wax isomerization unit at Fawley, you can see why they have gone to all Group III on their conventional PCMOs (at least in the US). Now that Fawley is in full swing XOM can produce Visom base oil (formerly known as ExxSyn) at a lower price than all hydroprocessed Group II and Group II+. Visom is a wax isomerate base oil (like Shell's XHVI) that has a VI of >140, extremely low pour point, and exceptional purity. Unlike hydrocracked Group III base oils, which still have some napthenic compounds, wax isomerates are almost 100% iso-parafins making them the only Group III that can be used to blend 0wXX oils without the use of some PAO.

What this boils down to is that the new Mobil Clean 5000 oil is probably better than 99% of the other Group III "synthetics" being sold at 3x the price.

I'd sort of like to see some VOAs of the new 5000 and 7500 mile oils to determine how good their add packs are before putting that into stone, but that is good news nonetheless!

Do you think that the 5000 and 7500 mile oils were the group IIIs that George CLS told us about so long ago, not the old Drive Clean?

We had a poster on here that told us about the Group III oils Mobil was going to use in their PCMO's and everyone doubted him. His name was Carpy and with the abuse and disrespect everone showed him, he requested the info be deleted and he does not post any longer.

Through out the entire Mobil Drive Clean controversy, I hinted at & maintained that the GRP III base oils were supplied out of Baytown.

Still believe this to be true - the new line of Clean 5000 & the GRP III component of Clean 7500 are Baytown base oils hydro-finished from solvent extracted feedstocks in the 120-125 VI range.

See my Reference posted in the Interesting Articles Forum.

That's the poster that I was thinking of! I got him and George_CLS mixed up.

According to the XOM documents I read, the ONLY Group III currently produced by XOM is Visom out of Fawley. (The article you referenced says nothing about Group III production, BTW.)

Baytown has probally reached catalyst end-of-run. If you look at figure 7, it shows the EIT (Equivalent Isothermal Temp) since the start of the run in 1999 and the plant is slowly "deactivating" it's catalyst and is probally off-line now.

See page 17 of the second article, the presentation in Russia on XOM lube refining technology.

It specifically calls out the capability of the RHC process, as 105 to 125.

Audi - See the date on the article you are referencing. With the demand for GRP III in GF-4 oils, the catalyst can be replaced.

Palut, I just sent a virgin Mobil Clean 5000 sample to Blackstone yesterday. I'll post the results as soon as they arrive.

G-Man, thanks for posting this. This is some good info.

These 5000/7500 oils might turn out to be great bargains.
