I know Motorcraft 400S is all the rage right now on the forums, so I thought I'd recommend an easy way to order these filters - Walmart.

http://www.walmart.com/ip/MotorCraft-Oil-Filter-FL400S/16817360

Simply type in your zipcode, and the online store locator will be able to tell you if the filter is in stock. Walmart also has free site-to-store, which can ship the filter in if your local store does not have it. Obviously can apply to any filter for that matter.

I used Walmart and their site-to-store feature for my General Altimax tires on the Focus - worked out rather well! (and cheaper than the going rate on Tirerack.com)

That will work! Nice thing about Motorcraft's as they are priced the same as Wally's at all the auto parts places around here, 4 bucks!

All the Wally's around here actually stock MC so that is handy too.

Here's one of my FL-400S cut open that had seen about 3,300 miles with Castrol HM and a full dose of MoS2. Great filter!

Yeah our Advance has them too. Usually walk in, grab them, pay and walk out. Since we drive Fords it just makes sense to use Motorcraft filters. The price is right and the quality is fine.

Ive always like Motorcraft oil fitlers.... Even back when I had my first car . a Bronco II,
I have to admit the first oil change i put a FRAM on... Hey, there was no Internet back then,
however after the guy at the part store was telling me to put the Motorcraft on it and i mostly use motorcraft.. Or once in a while in my family garage I used GROUP7 oil filters that are a cheap PUROLATOR.

WM here is trying to hone in on a corner of the "hard" auto parts market, though everything is special order. Wonder if they want the cash-only crowd.

Good tip on the tires.

Can anyone explain why the end cap has raised (dimples/bumps)?

I buy all my MC filters from WM now with the 5 qt jug. I turn down the parts stores oil and filter specials for the WM prices and convienience. When I need to change I just pick up 2 jugs and two MC filters and am never concerned with who has what on sale. EASY at WM.

My truck (08 Toyota Tacoma 2.7) calls for the FL-400S but I run the larger FL-1A. The truck only sees 5-6k miles/yr now with some boat towing in the summer and trips to the mtns in the winter. Used every wknd throughout the year for short trips around town to the dump/groceries.

I've been changing the oil and filter with synthetic every 7500 but given the low annual miles will just go back to once year. Given my profile do folks reccomemnd I use the larger FL-1A with the larger capacity but nitrile drainback valve or the smaller FL-400 with silicone valve for greater protection between changes?

I have used both on my Jeep with great results IMO the FL-400S is the superior filter but it's really a win-win between the two whatever floats your boat.

I believe those are the rivets that hold the thread end bypass in place. Here's a comparitive photo of a Puro Classic with dome end bypass - no rivets. Just my guess I've never torn one apart in such a manner to find out.

I've also used the FL-400S as an oversized filter on my Mazda 3 as well but the bottom sits on/rubs against the plastic fairing that is under the car. So while it's probably not a big deal I just went back to the FL-910S.

You might check again next FCI. At some point, the FL-400s was shortened by about a half-inch or so. I've got one on my Mazda5 (shared platform w/ the 3), and it doesn't rub the plastic shield.
