Couldn't believe it!
I love the looks and comfort of my 2000 Chevy Impala, but have always been a little disappointed with a "disconnected" feel in the steering.
Lately, in addition to the disconnected feel I'd been getting a clunking/popping feeling through the steering column when going over uneven pavement or turning, braking,and sometimes accelerating.
I'd been really down about this. I figured that they'd never be able to cure the problem and I'd be driving a mechanically perfect (thanks to BITOG) but clunky car for 10 or more years. I was thinking to **** with it, buy a Honda Accord and be making payments for 5 years
It really is important to me that my cars have a solid feel and be reasonably fun to drive. This car had neither and I'd had it!
Turns out it was a quick fix. A tube of grease in the "Intermediate Steering Shaft" and the steering feels like a new car. Stiff, on-center, no pops or clunks. It feels as good as our new Honda van! I was feeling saucy so I had them swap out the front rotors while I was there (they'd been pulsating all the time).
I guess the moral of the story is five hundred bucks here or there is SO much better than buying a new car.
