Researchers were stunned to discover recently that Earth is losing more of its atmosphere than Venus and Mars, which have negligible magnetic fields.

This may mean our planet's magnetic shield may not be as solid a protective screen as once believed when it comes to guarding the atmosphere from an assault from the sun.

"We often tell ourselves that we are very fortunate living on this planet because we have this strong magnetic shield that protects us from all sorts of things that the cosmos throws at us — cosmic rays, solar flares and the pesky solar wind," said Christopher Russell, a professor of geophysics and space physics at the University of California, Los Angeles.

"It certainly does help in some of those areas but ... in the case of the atmosphere, this may not be true," he said.

Russell and others came to this realization while meeting at a comparative planetology conference last month.

"Three of us who work on Earth, Venus and Mars got together and compared notes," Russell told Discovery News. "We said, 'Oh my goodness — what we've been telling people about the magnetic shield is not correct.'"

So much for that consensus.

Oh no it's not! I've been helping the atmosphere: I had an extra large burrito for dinner yesterday.

Well being good scientists, they admitted their mistake without being taken to court...

Has any large company ever done that on an environmental or product safety issue, ever?

Companies have the right to make conditions on what they will or will not permit during an inspection

They did nothing wrong on the documentation part. If their product caused people to get sick, they should be responsible.

Though I believe they put on the package that it should not be eaten raw.

They did nothing wrong .....

How many times have I heard that as a precursor to someone being held legally culpable for something that they did.

"I've done nothing wrong".

For those who don't recognize it, I'll reduce it a notch or two..

"I didn't do nothin'". While it usually starts at pre-adolescence ..it can linger on ..and even get refined as maturity sets in.

It was always my first indication that indeed something was done.

Perhaps they did do no wrong on the documentation. But when the lawyers for the people who got sick get a hold of this, imagine which closing argument would hurt Nestle the worst:

"And only when they realized their product make people sick did they release the internal documents."

Or:

"And even when they knew their product had made people sick, they did not release the documents requested by the FDA."

Which closing statement would hurt them (financially) the worst?
They voluntarily recalled their item to help themselves at lawsuit time. Remember the peanut butter recall? That company snowballed as much as they could and the public opinion closed that company.

I couldn't care less. The best cookies are home made anyway.

Sure, but if those documents don't reveal anything bad, it won't be much of an issue. The article clearly states that the FDA can force their way into documents and pictures but they apparently never found a reason. The last inspection was also clean.

It also states that no contamination of product has been found.
