Earlier in my career I spent a lot of time in hundreds of different, nousy manufacturing and lab environments, and as a result got to try lots and lots of different sorts of hearing protection. In terms of insertible foams, the Howard Leight Max was by far my favorite.

I'm not a fan of the band style ear plugs. I put them on with the band behind my head and then I hear all kids of noise through the plugs with the band rubbing on my collar or bouncing as I walk. I prefer individual foam plugs.

Just my $0.02

I'm the same way. I can't stand that band around the back of my neck. Especially when shooting Trap. For shoulder fired weapons, (rifle and shotguns), I use the cylindrical, crushable, individual foam plugs.

I can get them deeper into my ear canal, and when they expand out, they're comfortable to the point I sometimes forget they're in. For handgun shooting I wear the same, with additional headphones.

I can't shoot shotguns or rifles with headphones, because they hit the stock. This is really noticeable when shooting heavy recoiling rifles off a bench. For that I have a custom molded set of plugs. They work very well, but are somewhat bothersome. Especially in the warmer weather.

But for my Magnum rifles that are equipped with muzzle brakes, it gives the extra protection required. So I live with it.

I got custom made " musician" type molded plugs made at the audiologist. Think rock band drummer type protection. They have a very tiny hole with a filter to reduce noise level but still be able to have a conversation. Pricey but still good 30 years later.

I spent most of my life around diesel generators. For short runs, I always wear Peltor over ear muffs. If I'm going to work on a machine while one next to it is running, I always use a foam plug and the muffs. I'm 59 now and my hearing still checks out 100%.
This angers my wife because she says I have perfect, selective hearing.

I wear earplugs riding my side by side with the music on. 800 watts I can still hear it just fine lol

My dad on the other hand, almost never covered his ears, even when I offered up my spare muffs. His hearing is terrible. My brother and I used to be able to goof on him while he was in the room. Now he has hearing aids and can hear an ant fart. Gotta be careful what we say now.
