In reality, nuclear power can be effectively used for a process that both pulls carbon from the atmosphere or ocean, and separates hydrogen from water using waste heat and power in a thermoelectric process. Possibly of interest is that a nuclear plant can remain at peak power 24/7 and cycling between producing electrical power and producing the building blocks for liquid fuel. While not a particularly efficient process, it may not matter all that much.

Bio-butanol or seeing if gasoline can be produced from slaughterhouse waste like renewable diesel is would be the way to go to keep the ICE around.

Biodiesel was a good first step but also isn’t the most friendly for the existinf engine base. Renewable diesel - like the MY Neste and P66 types have proven to be a one-for-one drop-in, Cummins/Daimler/PACCAR have said it can be run in higher ratios without fouling up after treatment(like bio does) and it performs on-par if not better than petrodiesel.

Other than the costs, it's really not all that hard to understand. An in many ways, our fuels are already particularly synthetic through chemical processing at the refinery. I think Zippo has been using synthetic lighter fluid for years. It supposedly burns cleaner, has almost no odor, and doesn't irritate like traditional lighter fluid when spilled on skin.

The Rub here is cost - unless you can either sell it for the same price or convince people they are going to burst into flames in the next 10 minutes if they don't spend the extra no-one (almost) is going to buy it.
