FORD now charging for customers to use the Mach-E "Frunk"

Well, at a whopping $495, it darn well better be some fancy, sweet looking “plastic“. And who knows? Maybe the trunk finishing will be “smart“ which is more than I can say for a Ford motor companies communication strategies 😂
From reading if you have the tub insert it has drains. Ford initially marketed the tub as a way to store cold drinks in ice then drain when finished.

Just to be clear, you’re not being charged to use a frunk
A frunk is an option. It doesn’t exist unless you pay for it otherwise now it’s an unfinished area with just a bunch of wires and hoses.

Here you go -

100%. It’s amazing how many people can’t figure this out. You have the option to buy a cheaper car by omitting a bunch of plastic trim and storage parts.

It sure looks a lot bigger than people are describing. Seems well worth an extra $500 as a one time option. As far as subscriptions go, it’s no different than buying a house with a big HOA fee. All these fees (subscription/ HOA) just continue to climb every year.

That's the pre 2025 model. The discussion is about the 2025 model which has a smaller capacity due to the addition of a heat pump.

How long till Tesla follows suit?

Ironically, this is very close to what Tesla just did with the new “standard” trims. They went from a sealed, water-resistant, drainable, hardshell frunk (just like Mach-e) to just a flimsy fabric-based thing that gets wet in the rain. The owner’s manual even warns against putting anything in there that can’t get wet.

Original posting on FORD Authority:

Apparently, the "frunk" isn't the only previous supplied Item that is now being made optional. And no mention of a price decrease - so it seems "standard" items are becoming optional and add to the non-changed "standard" price of the car.

Well, at least it's not a subscription model on the radio or speakers like some other makes.

Sad though - I remember ordering my first car and I had to go through a bevy of options, and my car showed up with extra's I didn't want, BUT the dealer didn't charge me for them - factory error.

It is something that is prone to get lost or damaged since you have to take it out to work on the machinery.

I dont totally disagree with you but I do see a finished "Frunk" ok if Ford wants to charge for one, it's an option. I am not seeing that Ford is "charging for the use" of the frunk as that statement is not correct, without the option the frunk is not finished..

Vast difference between a finished space and an inaccessible space.

The free market will come up with a carpet liner or mat for an ugly unfinished space. Seems pretty ridiculous for it to come to this… but it is what it is.

If they “locked you out” that would be a major issue.

yes, and I think some people get that idea from the original post.
No one is locked out of opening the hood of their Mustang E
Basic maintenance items are there such as a battery, windshield washer fluid, and what seems to be a coolant reservoir maybe brake fluid as well.
Also access to the air conditioner high and low pressure connections

That's the 1st thing I thought of. In the Tesla world, the aftermarket floor mats and liners can be far better (I've bought both) and far cheaper. If the frunk has something in the way, they may even have a fix for that. Who knows?
Since the '24 Model 3 does not have steering column stalks, the aftermarket quickly came up with a simple solution. If you have $350, that is.

Ha yes, well, that may have been the first use of the word, but none of these companies can claim that they were the first to have a front trunk! When I was a university student in the 90s, my 30 year-old beater car had this feature. Thankfully, I didn’t have to pay $500 for it.

I dont think any of these companies making EV's claim to be the first to offer front storage

Storage in the front when none exists in the aft loses any concept of being additive.
Specifically in the case of a rear engine car not having storage in the back. It's simply "front storage" in these case.
Or a "boot" if you are British.

If you want to call that a Frunk you can, but the current held view of a "Frunk" implies additive storage to whats already available in the back or inside of the car in the case of a hatchback or a pickup truck - storage in an area usually reserved for an engine.

And then Ford will blame dismal sales on the public souring on EVs, not that they didn't make a more desirable vehicle.
But before that, they'll reshuffle their administration so the politically unconnected will go down with the ship.

I wonder if the aftermarket folk like Dorman would offer something similar.
Probably. If not Dorman someone else if the volume of this vehicle is enough.

However, just like with the non-existent spare tire, you can save some money by buying the car without it and finding an online dealer selling the part way cheaper than if you bought it with the car.

Why would you make business decisions that make your customer base disrespect you? Oh yea, just like politicians, its self enrichment and no shame. Just lame! Electronic hacks for these sorts of things to unlock functionality are just around the corner

Kia has de-contented the manual door locks, but I would bet the price didn't go down when they took out the manual locks:

If the case of the "frunk", IMO it's not usable without the "extra" piece so you can store things in it, making it unusable. With this KIA, if the car loses power how do you get out of the the car, expecially in an emergency (and what about the child locks in the back doors)?

De-contented AND unsafe, all for the same price! What a deal. SMH
