The Pioneer DVR-K17 in my laptop will no longer play DVDs, but it will play CDs. I do not know what caused it to do this. The device manager says that the drive is working properly. I am running Windows Vista. Any ideas?

Check the mechanical spindle and the plates that the dvd rest on..if those things are dirty they could allow the disc to slip and not be able to play.

Go here ( http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ ) and download the vlc mediaplayer, its a free media player.. last time i checked it has dvd codecs, if this works then your dvd player is still functional.

I have the KMP player already. The problem is that the drive does nothing when a DVD inserted. No spinning up or anything. But, music CDs are fine.

Can you be more specific, please?

It plays audio CDs fine and looks clean.

The drive is likely dying. Try cleaning the lens with rubbing alcohol. If that fixes it, great. If not, you'll need a replacement drive.

When you open the "My Computer" does it say "DVD Drive" or "CD Drive"?

Actually, this would be in XP terminology. I don't know what Vista calls the "My Computer".

It says DVD RW Drive.

I also did a system restore a few days back when It Was Working and still nothing.

My old laptop has the same problem, seems to be the drive. I managed to limp it along by cleaning the lens and pushing the head all the way toward the spindle before putting the disc on the spindle, but mine will only read CDs. DVDs just make it act like there's no disc.

Check the DVD region settings in device manager. If it's set to like india or something, it may not work. I have never had this problem, but its the DVD aspect of it only, so its worth a shot.

My DVD-RW drive recently refused to read CD-RWs, while normal CDs and DVDs were fine. After opening a data DVD and putting back the CD-RW, it recognized it again. Maybe it got internally confused about what it was reading. Try opening some data CDs (don't just pop them in, load some files from it) and see if that helps any.
