My Mondeo ST220's Duratec V6 has developed a top end tap when the engine is hot. I tried a dose of Seafoam in the oil for 1000miles and recently performed the TSB where you remove the front bank exhaust cam caps and re-torque down the camshaft but neither has worked. While performing the TSB I replaced both rocker cover gaskets as they were weeping and got some photos.

The car has records of oil changes every 12k or 1 year, whichever came first.

I switched to an oil with a good ester content thinking it may clean up what I think is a sticky/dirty lifter over a long period of time but not holding out much hope.

Think I'm going to start saving for a rebuild!

I agree. Cut your oil change interval in half, 6months or 6k miles, while saving for a rebuild.

Maybe it'll slowly clean up but any damage is already done.

Skip the flushes, keep the oil level full, stick with full synthetic oil, and if using thin MPG oil, step up a grade. Learn from your past mistakes and don't repeat them on any other motors you own.

I'd give @Trav 's recommendation a shot. Going forward I would shorten the OCI, imo 12K miles is way too long for you. I'd probably cut the OCI in half, depending on the oil maybe stretch it from half to 7.5K miles, or a year whatever comes first. Flame suit on.

Our Taurus has been tapping for 150-200k miles now and is coming up on 400k. If it’s just valvetrain noise I wouldn’t worry. The oil analysis is always stellar on ours.

Do you have the number of the TSB? I an gonna have to do this on our Taurus.
Did this on an old Taurus Duratec. Not hard to do. Helped some. Hard to understand how the cam cap for cyl 6 can move by doing the service bulletin or what changes to get rid of the noise. Let us know how it goes.

For old Taurus 06-3-5

A bit different for 08-3-10 Fusion 2006

I've used it relating to firearms. What is your experience in vehicles? And how much to a quart would be needed?

Bought a used truck several years ago that had a lot of varnish that could be seen through the oil fill tube. Didn’t measure how much I used but I’d say probably a pint or so. I’d pour in the crankcase a day or so before I changed the oil and after a few changes there was a very noticeable difference. So for me it worked well

Hi All,

Just wanted to throw some more information into this mix with this one.

The Mondeo ST220 is the direct sucsessor to the Mondeo ST200 or Contour SVT as it was known in the US. Generally these things get driven hard and abused.

The owners manual reccomends a 5w30 ACEA A1/B1 with WSS-M2C913B oil. This oil has since been superceeded by 913C and then 913D and is now an A5/B5 oil. The factory reccomended intervals are 1 year or 12,500miles.

I bought the car in June 2019 with 142k on the clock. Records show it's had oil changes at the dealer every 12,500miles or 1 year until I bought it.

  1. June 2019 (142k) - Changes oil with Morris Lubricants 15w40 HD9 and a Mann Filter.
  2. October 2019 (143k) - Tapping started and noticed the engine was consuming a bit of oil so dropped 7oz of Seafoam in the oil and the rest in the fuel tank.
  3. June 2020 (144k) - Changed oil with Fuchs Titan XTL 5w40 and a Mann Filter.
  4. December 2021 (146k) - Changed oil with Fuchs Titan Race Pro 5w40 and a Mann Filter.
I've also replaced the PCV, sparkplugs, leads, coilpack, air filter, fuel filter and all the vacuum hoses and gaskets during my ownership.
