A piece of a bridge under construction west of Denver Colorado collapsed and literally cut a Dodge Durango (that is what the vehicle appeared to have been) in half. Three people died in the vehicle.

The messed up thing is that someone had previously see the beam bent and looking very dangerous, but never called the police or fire dept.

BTW, it was just a beam that fell....the bridge didn't collapse.

Yes, the guy knew about construction and was very interested in looking at construction taking place on bridges, etc. He saw the bow in the beam and did not bother to call anybody. If I was him I would feel pretty bad right now. Maybe he felt guilty to even come forward and tell his story.

If you see something and you feel something is wrong, better to let somebody know. Better to be laughed at then have regrets later on.

you see that the bottom half of the car was le 200ft. away? Hopefully those poeple ddn't feel much...

I've drven under that bridge quite a few times.

I drove past the scene 40 minutes after it happened (via northbound C470 to eastbound I-70) and got a good look (from slightly above) at the accident scene (I picked a bad time to visit the west side of town). There was about 3 feet of clearance under the beam. It looked like the beam fell, sliced off the top cab of the truck (and occupants) while the engine, drivetrain and frame assembly continued to roll down the road. I can gurantee it was a gory body recovery...they never had a chance. I watched the news this morning and I didn't hear any accounts of anyone seeing damage before the accident...just interested to know where you get your information. 2-year old girl died...what a shame.

It's sad when people get killed in situations like that.

One of my friends (we call him the unluckiest man to still be alive) had a bridge fall on his car, after a crane knocked it.

We were watching the evening news, and saw a flat Mitsubishi Pajero with his numberplate on it. He was just transferring his scuba bottle to a dive shop, took one from the car, turned around and walked three paces, and his car was flattened.

He was bitten by a shark a few months later.

I was looking at some pictures of this on the web (I Yahoo'd for Denver News). What a scary way to die. I can only imagine the shock and fear those people must have felt in the split second before they hit that beam, knowing they had no chance to avoid being killed. It's the kind of thing that makes you grateful just to be alive.

We've actually just had a spate of bridge-related accidents around here. I believe they all involved construction equipment being hauled improperly and striking the bridge. One bridge was damaged so heavily that it had to come down. Perhaps it's time to re-evaluate safety standards to prevent this from happening again, not that it would have helped that family in the Durango, unfortunately. It seems though, that we may be taking our highway overpasses for granted, leading to these problems.

They would have been much better off (under the circumstances) if the beam fell flat on the pavement surface. At least that way the air bags would have had a chance to deploy. They still may have not survived the accident but they would have had a chance. I'll bet the airbags didn't deploy because the front bumper didn't receive a shock to activate them.

At least it was instantaneous which is the only good thing you can say about this. We also had a couple of huge bridge collapses. Google search Tasman bridge disaster hit by a bulk carrier, and the West Gate bridge disaster (www.westgatebridge.org)

I have a relative in the broadcasting business who sent me a helicopter video of the cops chasing a stolen Durango at 100 mph. Thief clips another car, flips it over the jersey barrier, the roll forces the car thief out the window and into the 8 oncoming lanes where he is promptly run over by traffic.
