DuraMAX Motor Oil?

New member here with a question. The dealer I just purchased a Mazda CX-5 from uses DuraMAX motor oils in their oil change operation. They offer a full synthetic oil change as well as a lower priced one with regular oil. I found the website for DuraMAX and it looks like their full synthetic oil meets some national standards but I have never heard of the brand before. It looks like DuraMAX mainly markets to the trade and not to consumers. Here their website:

Anyone here have any information on the quality of this brand of oil? I'm sure the dealer can order Mazda brand oil (which I understand is very good oil) but that will require me to call ahead a few days in advance so they can order and I'm sure I'll get gouged on the price of the oil service.

I'd appreciate any advice from the oil experts. My new car has a turbo engine and I think turbo engines are more demanding of good lubrication than naturally aspirated engines.

Is this a Napleton dealership? That's the only ones in the St. Louis area using this oil. Interesting web site. Absolutely nothing about the company but lots about their 400,000 mile warranty. Shows you how little exposure there is for oil related problems. Seems a bit like BG products to me. Highly dealer centric and designed to keep you coming back to the dealer to keep that warranty in place. Hope it's cheaper than BG. I'm sure the oil's fine. Your wallet may not be.

So they're selling WDD stuff with an addon warranty from the dealer. What do you get that you don't get at Wally? Of course Wally's closed.

I'd start by asking the dealer how much a Duramax synthetic oil change is for your CX-5. If it sounds too high, and it certainly could be more than going to a solid independent shop, I'd pass and go somewhere else. There are lots of private label oils that have Dexos certs and are more transparent with their company and product information.

Get Pennzoil UP and handed to them, let them use their filter.
If they don't agree, change oil somewhere else (or DIY)

As has been noted. This is the house brand for Reladyne.

I actually dealt with them quite a bit a few years ago when I was in the auto industry. Their target is dealers, independent shops and quick lubes. They were tested a few years ago by the PQIA and while their ATF had some labeling discrepancies, the oil tested just fine.

It is a Napleton's dealership in Urbana, IL. Some of the DuraMAX marketing strategies (rebate coupons, outlandishly long warranties, and the like) came off as a bit cheesy, which made question in my own mind how good the oil was. Glad to hear most think it is a satisfactory oil. I know I could probably save a buck or two by going elsewhere for changes, but taking it to the dealer is convenient for me and a lots of times I have some other little thing to do to the vehicle which I think would be better done by Mazda mechanics.

Comparing this to the BG stuff posted several weeks ago. BG's oil didn't meet the Dexos spec, although it still looked OK. Like this, it was sold through dealers and came with a healthy warranty. The purpose of both of these brands is to keep you coming back to the same dealer. Without Dexos, you would go back to the sponsoring dealer on a repair cause you might get denied if you went to any old Chevy dealer. Fascinating marketing that forces you into overpriced dealer service. Even on this Dexos approved stuff, you better keep going back to Napleton if you want to protect your investment of wrapping oil and insurance together into a single overpriced product.
