Hello gents and ladies on BITOG. What would a person get if he/she mixed PYB 5W20 AND ROTELLA 5W40 SYN diesel oil? I dont have the best internet access and couldnt load Widmans viscosity calculator, so PLEASE bear with me. Someone here told me that mixing PYB 5W30 and ROTELLA 5W40 SYN would make for one dandy VOA/UOA. Basically what do you get if you mix a 5w30 and 10w30 half/half? You get the idea.

both should still retain the 5w- characterstic. You would see a higher HTHS and higher viscosity than the 20wt, lower than the 40. Depending upon where they each lie, and assuming 50/50, you would get a light or heavy 30wt. Add pack would have the hybrid characteristics of a FM PCMO with some added ZDDP, and detergent/dispersant, maybe slightly higher TBN too.

Thanks gentlemen, and I kinda see now. So if you mixed say Rotella 10w30 syn blend with Rotella 15w40 Triple Protection would you end up with a light or heavy 10W30?

It would be a very heavy 10w30

Thank you Clevy. I asked a while ago Clevy, but forgot/maybe didnt pay attention; but what is a FAR?

And op
Since both oils start with 5 it would retain that characteristic and the second number you add together then divide by 2.
So a 5w-35. Might be a good combo. A decent dose of moly, great cleaning and a dash of zinc.

Thank you very much for that info Zaedock, as I am dumb in stuff and never knew that.

More like a heavy 12.5w30 or real light 12.5w-40.

You're not dumb man! It's just another BITOG <- acronym.

You'd end up with a 10w30 that exhibits very poor cold start protection.

Whats happened? Did the thin oil gang come knocking?

using the Widman calculator @ 50% you'd have 77.72 cSt @ 40c or roughly same as Castrol 5W-40... The 100c would be 12.75 or at the bottom of the 40W scale... So in essence you's still have a 5W-40 oil, only somewhat lighter...

BTW the specs I found for PYB are 63.9 & 10.5, Rotella syn is 95 & 15.5...

If you can't beat'em - join'em.

You better not!

First it was slick50 and duralube...then it was seafoam...now its thin oil...Hows that for encouragement?

Stick with your view, we need that or BITOG will flip over from all the thin oil!
