Does the 2.2l engine used in the 1998/99 Chevy Cavalier have a timing belt or a chain? I'm pretty sure it's a chain, but I just want to make sure.

What?I think you misunderstood what I stated. What I was trying to say is if its pushrod it will usually have a chain, if its OHC it will usually be a chain or belt. There are other methods of getting movement to the cam, these are just generalizations.
For example, The Ford GAA WWII tank motor has shaft driven dual over head cams.

Plenty of pushrod V8's have chains. The only motor I know of with factory gears is the 300 I6 from Ford.

For a little trivia quiz, does anybody know which recent high production Japanese motorcycle used a gear-driven timing set?

Another gear driven (near bullet proof) engine was the International Harvester {IHC} 304-345 V8. There was another, larger displacement also but I don't remember what it was.

ONLY dumb question is the one unasked.
