dumb coolant question

My manual for my motorcycle says use an ethylene glycol coolant. Is there a "pure" eg coolant? I looked at the MSDS for the walmart/supertech brand coolant, and it's pretty much EG, but there's a couple percent di-ethyl blahblah stuff in there.

is straight EG the original green stuff? Or am I likely to harm anything using the supertech coolant?

There is no "pure" EG coolant. All coolants are about 95% EG with the extra additives making the difference between traditional green and the new organic acid ones (OAT/HOAT). Plus there's the low-toxicity ones that use propylene glycol instead.

Without knowing how old your motorcycle is, it's hard to say what kind they expect you to use. Sicne they don't seem aware of OAT coolants, you probably want traditional green, but can't say for sure.

It's an '01. Kawasaki vulcan. It just says in the manual, and I quote:

"use an ethylene glycol coolant".

For now, I'm going to pour in some peak coolant, and it will have to cope. Or some Supertech walmart goop.

Sounds good to me.

It seems every Japanese car I have worked on, which had been filled with regular green, would have an early water pump death.

I doubt the motorcycle pumps are built differently.

Same basic idea. You can replace the seal or impeller pretty easily.

I use Peak Global (yellow) in my '01 ZRX1200R, and it seems to work well. It's been in there for 2 years now, and no sign of problems.
