Where did the money come from, to subsidize the purchase of these cars, which were "private property"?

My little 30-MPG compact was ineligible for Cash for Clunkers, but my neighbors could get a hefty voucher for their gas-guzzler. Why should my tax money be used to reward them for a bad decision they made some years ago, when gas was cheap?

What's going to happen if a lot of people with borderline finances can't payments on the new cars they bought via Cash for Clunkers? We're in a recession, don't ya know? Is there going to be a bailout for them? Sure I would have LOVED a brand new car in 2009 but NO WAY was I going to tackle a new-car payment, not in that kind of economy!

How about the downtrodden people driving the REAL clunkers, the 30-year-old heaps that are unsafe and most likely coughing out all kinds of pollutants. Those are the people who couldn't even take advantage of Cash for Clunkers, and are still stuck driving their junkers. Couldn't some of the late-model C4C trade-ins be handed out to help some of those people? I saw a LOT of really nice late-model SUVs get crushed, while some people who are barely able to put food on the table are driving the same deathtraps they've had for decades.

cash for clunkers was several years ago, sir.

Even though I've grown up "a little" over the years I still like to do a few things to a car when I get it. I like a slight tint to the windows, usually %35 not to dark. I also like a tuner, adds a bit of power and a slight bump in fuel economy. A nicer stereo if it needs it, but I just dont care to spend money on anything else.

So if they financed for 60 months, they're halfway through by now.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I think its wrong to try to shore up a shaky economy by tricking people into taking on even more debt. Wasn't that part of the problem in the first place? People were losing their homes because they owed more on them than they were worth. Throw in a car payment on top of their mortgage (because they traded in their car sooner than they might have otherwise) and its just compounding the problem. But, hey, I guess its OK because Joe the car salesman down the street is doing OK because he made a nice commission on the sale.
