Duel exhaust system question

Thinking about putting dual exhaust on an 89 suburban. I see references to H-pipes or X-pipes to connect the two sides.

1) what is the importance of this? Is it only sound?

2) Is it a practical problem on my vehicle?
 
the H and X pipes even out the exhaust impulses. if you ran straight pipes with no crossover i guarantee you it will sound weird.

my mustang came from the factory with 6 cats on a H pipe. i switched out to a OffRoad(no cats) X pipe. the sound difference was huge. a lot more raspy / NASCAR type sound with the X pipe.
 
If you want to keep it quiet at all you will stick with the single pipe and muffler type assembly all the way to the back. True dual exhaust has left bad tastes in my mouth in the past unless it came on the car that way in the first place. For a suburban, why bother? Just keep it quiet, give it a 3" pipe to breathe through and if you want it a little rumblier find a nice rumble muffler that isn't terribly loud (resonator + Flowmaster 70 series) to make it nice. If you want dual tips, go with a single inlet dual outlet muffler.
 
In my experience, an H or X pipe will improve torque and MPG slightly (vs. duals w/o a crossover). On a Suburban, those are both things you want. Still, a good single exhaust might be the best solution.
 
Things to consider;

If you have state inspection it will require cat converter.

Against federal law to remove cat converter.

system in link doesn't include converters.

'89 model will perform just fine without cat converter if you aren't concerned with breaking the law.

Original cat converter and pipes forward are STAINLESS steel and will never rust out even in Iowa. These parts are 3" diameter.

As a full time exhaust system professional I'd reccommend (for this particular application only) going to local muffler shops for estimates to install (1) 3"dia. extension pipe,(1)3"in/out HD welded truck muffler,& (1) 3" dia tailpipe. Large single pipe will retain/boost low end torque and at same time not provide restriction at highway speed. If you were gonna run it on some type of track at rpm's above 5K by all means go duals.

Aftermarket Catalytic Converters are available and may not be tooooo expensive. Some cars came with dual exhausts with cat. (Crown Vic).
At one time, you could get rebuilt cat.con., haven't been around exhaust shops in some time.
 
I put on a Gibson Catback dual exhaust on my F150 5.4. Got a little more, seat of the pants, take off, but not a lot. With this exhaust system, it only sounds noticable when you get on it and I don't mean NASCAR sounding either, just a nice, neat throaty letyouknowyouhaveatruck kind of sound. But when on the interstate or just easy cruising, you don't even know it's there. A good happy medium between the wife and I.
 
The crossover pipe allows less restriction of certain pulses, because there are TWO pipes, instead of one, for the exhaust gas to see.
Street cars like crossovers.
With many V8 engines, there used to be a crossover in the intake manifold, used to heat the fuel and vaporize it.
So even if you ran dual pipes, you still had some crossover balance.
 
Generally speaking, and up to a certain point for a given vehicle, the more air it takes into the combustion chamber, and the easier it is for the exhaust to leave the engine, the more hp and torque it will have. That's one of the main reasons that people modify the airbox, or replace the airbox with an aftermarket air intake system, to allow more air to reach the combustion chamber. Its also one of the main reasons why people install an exhaust system, from the header, or the catalytic converter, to the tailpipe, that has larger diameter pipes and more free flowing cats, resonators, and mufflers. How much hp and torque gain you get from either modification depends on the engine. For some engines its very little and not worth the expense. On others, it can be up to or more than a 5 hp and 5 ft. lbs. of torque gain from the air intake modification and the same gain from the exhaust system modification.

The tradeoff is that modifying either the incoming or outcoming air flow increases the noise, although some people want the increased noise and in fact the "noise" is a second main reason for such modifications. The noise factor is the reason that vehicles come from the factory with air intake and exhaust systems designed to minimize the noise. The trade off in minimizing noise is of course increased restriction in air inflow and outflow and a bit less hp and torque.

A third reason for such modifications is an alleged increase in mpg, which, personally, I have never seen adequately documented for any engine.
 
The 89 sub has the 350 tbi. Orig exhaust is rusted out so needs to be replaced. Quiet is ok with me on the otherhand my hearing is going so probably won't notice the dif.

Was interested in increasing mpg and power mostly.

+1 to that. I put a Gibson single pipe catback performance system on my 2003 Ford Ranger, which has the 3.0 liter V6, and got the same results.
