When I was in college back in 1975 I worked part time at a Speed Shop. We used to sell an oil "Duckhams Q". It was green and smelled great. It was very distinctive. Anybody remember this oil? Is it still made?

Jeff

I remember it well, I believe it was the OEM fill for Rolls Royce.

It was/is a recycled base stock oil.

I remember hearing something about duckhams being bought and shut down by castrold. And that the oil today is named castrol classic 20-50 and i sold in metalcans.

We had it here in Australia too. I can remember using it some time around 1985 to 1987 I think.

I don't remember it being called "Q" though. That might have been a local (US) thing. I can distinctly remember the green colour though. It was just a dye, just a good gimmick.

The other gimmick they had here was the "pull out spout". I remember that very clearly too. When you unscrewed the top it would lift out a little clear plastic spout that made it easier to pour. Depending on the car and the accessibility of the filler, that was actually a good idea.

VERY surprised to hear that it was sold in a U.S. speed shop, especially back then when there was NO 'import tuner movement' to speak of.

I remember them sponsoring the old, solid axle RWD Escort Cossies back in the late '60s to early '80s world and Brit rally championships.

Yep, those were the good old days. Performance World in San Diego was the Speed Shop.
I spent more there than I earned. Datsun 510 - SSS Datsun Head, Twin Weber 45DCOE sidedraft carbs, Minilite Wheels, Mullholland Springs, Koni Shocks, BRE Swaybars, Cibie Lights, Duckhams Q. God I miss that car...lol

BP own both the Duckhams and Castrol brand names and stopped marketing the Duckhams oil in around 2008 2009.

The Castrol Classic 20W/50 is based on their XL range available in the sixties.

Yep, I used the green Duckhams when it was available in Oz...mixed 75:25 with Mobil 1 15W-50 for my own syn blend.

Does Minilite even still exist as a company, or are they gone now that Panasport bought out their patents for that style wheel??

Well I have a pair of Weber 45DCOE carb's and 15" X 6.5" Minilites with some old Yoko 008's ( btw they are anything but light unless they are cast in magnesium, they're just spares now) on my Caterham but I refuse to use an antiquated 20W-50 grade.

I "think" Minilites are still made. But I had Panasports on a later 240Z. They were much better wheels and much lighter than the Minilites. Finished better too. I also had some Revolution wheels with shaved BFGs for autocross. They were even lighter. Can you still get Panasport street wheels?

It seems Duckhams oil is back, or at least the name is

https://www.duckhams.com

I would love to see a VOA of some of their products. A quick search seems to show many of the company executives are of East Indian origin and hope to sell in the Asian market.

Your thoughts?

Interesting web page, looks like they are going for the classic market with API SJ 20W-50 and low detergent SAE 30 & SAE 40.

They don't give too much away

Through careful selection of oxidation-stable base oils and additive technology, Duckhams Classic Q 20W-50 protects from bearing corrosion and prevents sludge build-up.
Duckhams Classic Q 20W-50 is formulated specifically for vehicles manufactured from 1950 - 1989 and also older vehicles where full-flow cartridge filters have been retro-fitted.
Optimised ZDDP ("zinc") level for engine component wear protection is a leading feature of Duckhams Classic Q 20W-50
API SJ/CD performance level
Original, distinctive "Duckhams green" colour

I would like to know what their optimum zinc level is. I assume oxidation stable base oil is Group II, but it would be nice to know for sure.

I like how it's their traditional green colour.

Looks like they have modern engine oils too

etc

Sold through OPIE in the UK but made in Malaysia
