Can we get a lock here? This thread has wondered extremely offtopic. It was about a new Truck that was built and designed in The USA and some of us are excited about it. Obviously others are not so enthused.
It has drifted way off topic into personal agendas and percieved social issues. The Topic has succesfully been hijacked.

Let's see, 533,000 Tundras recalled due to a suspension problem. 4 Million total for electrical and steering. I don't know where that 9.3 million comes from but . . .

From here: http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/recalls/list_e.asp

drill down to 'Toyota' and click on 'Search". the same recall shows up for model years 2004 - 2007.

On certain vehicles, the connection at the intermediate shaft or the intermediate extension shaft may become loose or the intermediate shaft sleeve may develop a crack under certain operating conditions. The connection may separate or the shaft sleeve may fracture, which could result in the loss of steering control and an increased risk of a crash. Correction: Dealers will replace the steering intermediate shaft. In addition, the dealer will inspect the sliding yoke and the intermediate extension shaft and replace them if necessary.

So, it's a serious steering problem.

Actually if you take a look at recall rate ie recalled vehicles/1,0000 the tundra 2002 - 2006 is either the the worst or second worst or tied for second worst in the light FULLSIZE ( pick up ) truck segment ( USA ) DURING 2002 -2006 DEPENDING ON THE YEAR COMPARED .

The hit piece that FORBES put out on Dodge , Chevrolet , GMC , AND Honda ( hybrids ) is so misleading - I'm working on correcting it as we speak .

One of many things the toyota people don't want to bring up is the recall rate which takes into account volume -think about .

What they do focus on is number of recalls regardless of the number of vehicles involved . ( OR FOR THAT MATTER THE NATURE OF THE RECALL )

As an example , in 2005 , the Dodge Ram series outsold the toyota tundra 400,543 vs 126,529 .

If you do the math Dodge would have to have 3.16562211 times the number of recalled trucks to have the same rate as the toyota .

I haven't finished crunching the numbers , but so far , even counting the recent recalls for Dodge they look to have a 30 -60% lower recall rate on the Ram than toyota on the tundra DURING 2002 -2006 overall with 2002 -2005 in DODGE'S FAVOR AND 2006 PERHAPS IN TOYOTAS .

If the past predicts the future and you own a Dodge RAM ONE OF MANY reasons to avoid the 2007 tundra would be the previous tundras recall rate - you'ed be trading down .

Lets also look at what new model owners have experienced at toyota AND lexus when a model is replaced or renewed , starting with the 2004 Prius ,the 2005 avalon , and on thru with the 2007 camry .

THEN WE CAN LOOK AT TSB NUMBERS AND ADD IN ALL THE CAMPAIGNS .

That 9.3 million should read AT LEAST 9.85 MILLION WORLD WIDE -I'm trying to pin that done too , but I CAN SAY ITS THAT NUMBER OR HIGHER .

Oh , and on incentives there seems to be two programs - one of which was in play from day one . Now lets consider GMs sales numbers in this segment for the month of FEB . - TOYOTA JUST GOT CLOCKED .LUTZ is probably right 120,000 - 150,000 for the year with GM STEALING THE SHOW .

One other number for the truck guys that matters , direct toyota employment in the States is 38,000 - THEY DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT ONE EITHER OR THAT THEY ARE PLANNING TO INCREASE IMPORTS FOR 2007-2008 .

My FIL recently got a 2007 Tundra double cab, 4.7, 4x4 company truck to replace his 2005 Tundra. It really is an impressive looking, feeling, sounding and riding truck (I havent driven it yet). My FIL, not being used to it's size, backed into a hard packed snowbank while plowing with the 2007. Backing into a snowbank did close to $2K worth of body damage to this truck. It mashed the right rear corner of the bumper into the corner of the bed and crumpled the area behind the rt rear wheel. Just under $2K at a mom/pop body shop made it brand-new again. His previous Chebbies were not as sensative in regards to this.

Isn't the Tundra's V8 the same size as the Chevy small block? I guess you must be talking about the 454 when you are talking about big V8.

But unless I am doing big time towing and a lot of it, the terrible fuel economy of the 454 coupled with the awful ride that comes with the HD suspension (needed to carry the load)and the poor handling when the truck is unloaded is more than I can take.

Just look what Toyota and Honda did to the Chrysler Voyager/MPV market. The Honda Odyssey has become the de facto MPV followed by Sienna and Voyager. In the Mid Size sedan, I cannot see anything from Detroit coming close to the Camry or Accord (I remember the days when the Taurus as a top seller)despite huge rebates.

All I am trying to say is that once Toyota wants to move into a market segment, Detroit had better watch out.

It is like the AA 12 step program. First Detroit must admit that they are building cars/trucks that no one wants despite the heavy rebates. It is not the legacy healthcare cost of union workers that they are trying to put blame on.

Would you buy a Chevy Uplander (huh?) or Ford Freestar (what's that?) over a Honda Odyssey even though it might be thousands cheaper? Not for me because I know that when it comes to resale, I will get hammered big time on the Chevy.
