New Jetta IS rubbish, you feel it as soon as you sit in one...very plasticky and cheap feeling, especially if you have an old (previous) gen. to compare.

Only the Sportwagon still has the old interior with better material.

I don't mind the exterior, though. It's nothing special, but not bad either.

I belive the OP test drove the base Jetta with the 2.slow motor.
If you are looking for fun, performance, etc take out a higher model with the 2.5 or even better the Jetta GLI with the 2.0 Turbo out for a spin, they are not even remotely the same.

The thing to remember here with the new Jetta's is the base model was designed for a purpose. The higher end models are more in line with what folks expect from VW.

I have the MK V ( the generation previous) and I still really like it. No plans to trade in for the newer generation yet. No reason too!

The Daily Telegraph in London described the new Jetta as a car 'only a mother could love' and one of the most disappointing of the year.

In the early 2000's, CR Mag scored the Passat/Jetta very high in their respective catigories. They were great cars with exceptional build quality, interior materials, ride/handling/drivetrains. But, they were expensive! Today, they're less expensive and it shows.

Today, CR mentions that they don't like the direction that VW is taking with the Passat/Jetta or many other VW's.

I don't think that CR likes the direction that HONDA is taking either. I'd agree with CR Mag on both MFG's.

I don't like where much of the auto industry is going. But, I do like where some of it is going. I think the GM is making some very nice vehicles

You'll be amazed with the difference.

The Golf is 99.8% identical to the European Golf and it was made in Germany, unlike the Jetta which is made in Mexico.

VW cheapened the Jetta to make it a bit cheaper.

This.

I tend to agree as I went with an "07 VW Jetta over a new VW Jetta...much more car with the 07. But no matter what you, I or CR have to say money talks and VW's sales are up big time.

In the most recent edition of C/D, a new Jetta 2.5 won a comparo against about 8 other cars in that category - Camry, Sonata, Malibu...they even rated the handling as one of the strong points.

I stand corrected!

I can't even tell the darn things apart! I didn't 'register' the name, it was just 'yeah, that's a Jetta!'

Duh!
