Fwiw, based on my observation of post use DW's here and having watched AAP and WM handle filter manufacturer changes with filter options, I tend to agree with your assessments.
Most of the post use DWs have looked generally respectable in pics. Biggest occasional compliant was a non functioning adbv at some point in the oci. A comment seen with some nitrile adbvs from other brands. As for efficiency, saw one word of mouth spec posted. Someone contacted AAP, and 'if' reliable while not great or saying much, it was still better than some Asian oems. The China made filters give little or no info on efficiency. In my observation the coo presented the biggest objection. For ~5k ocis, they seemed ok.
I also think the move to the back/commercial and likely to clearance has to do with making room for the two CQ (red, blue) filter applications. Also imo, why the FU is no longer sold at AAP, the desire to have a selection of filters from differing manufacturers represented. WM did the same with Champ Super Tech filter when Rank bought Fram after buying Champ. The Super Tech when to the TLE as the 'Fram' Core and the Classic took its place. And now replaced by the Wix made for Super Tech.
The AAP Total Grip filter, predecessor to the DW, followed a similar pattern. Moved to commercial accounts first and closed out. As an aside the AAP TG, as posted
HERE was my favorite value tier filter. Had great results with them.
