Drive or restore?

While cars like this make me feel nostalgic. I can't help but think what would manifest if I got into an accident in a rusty 50 year old car versus a Suburban.

Not mutually exclusive.
This would make a fun running project car.
Drive it, and do a little work as you go.
Obviously, not a body-off restoration.

Drive it enjoy it. Join the network54 ford "fe" forum.

You will always be able to restore it.

Once restored it has morphed into something that requires kid gloves.

I would turn it into a period correct NASCAR-type project!!

It's no more risky to drive than it was 50 years ago, except for maybe a little less structural integrity due to the rust. Doesn't seem like its a daily driver/primary car anyway.

I'd drive it as is. I think it's cool to see a vehicle that shows its age, but is still a strong runner. Like a coin with nice toning. The character of the car has its own value that would be lost forever if it got a full rotisserie restoration with all new parts.

What about those 50 year old seat belts? That's right, he wasn't wearing his seat belt in the video. As long as there is texting and SUV's on the road, that car belongs in the barn.

My perspective:

Suburbans started being built in the mid-sixties, so they aren't a new threat. Plus, they actually aren't very substantial. My Tacoma was T-boned by one. Result - distorted bed side on the Tacoma, completely destroyed front on the Suburban (looked like it hit a wall). This was a late-90's vehicle and the newest ones seem to be no more substantial.

But I will admit I wouldn't want to be in a car with no door beams (although I have also been T-boned in the driver's door in a car that didn't have them (63 Falcon)). And the new threat from people texting and just generally driving errantly would bother me.

I have a mid-80's shortbed pickup. One reason I don't drive it often is because there are no headrests and there is little room between the seat and back glass. Choosing between a concussion from being rear ended and head smacking the glass, vs whiplash - isn't much of a choice.

As far as restoring the Ford, he should at least make some attempt at painting. Make it look at least semi-presentable!

I'm fully aware. Its true and is a fact. Heck until 3 years or so ago I NEVER wore one. Use to brag that my 12 year vehicles seat belts look new! LOL . I do wear then for the most part. It is more then a new habit. But that OLE FORD is only going out once in a blue moon. Does it even HAVE seat belts.
