Draining oil to save for later?

Hammer/ThirdeYe -- sounds like a feasible idea... IIRC Auto-Rx is incompatible with synthetics during the rinse phase only... usually dino is used in the clean phase for economic reasons.

Pablo -- so no harm to Amsoil using the recommended dose of LC20? Extended drain capabilities stay the same? I'm wary of oil additives in general but it seems that LC20 has a good rep around here, and I was possibly going to order some FP Plus anyway.

Merkava_4 -- Perhaps even the best oils can't attack carbon like Auto-Rx?

Kralik, auto-rx is compatible with Pennzoil Platnum and Castrol Synetc and all other group III synthetics for the rinse phase as long as it is extended to 2500 miles.

1) Yes it's fine to add the AutoRx at the last 2000-3000 or so miles of the OCI. I guess I was just thinking for the BEST cleaning (BITOG anality) - I would still run the Amsoil out (maybe drain it out with Amsoil flush or heavy LC dose), THEN put in fresh dino and AutoRx.

2) LC has a spotty history IMHO. I'm not so sure it's the best thing in long drains, and Amsoil certainly doesn't need LC. I think it's a fine cleaner, especially with a 2X cleaner dose 500 or miles before the end of a run. Works with any oil, and following a synthetic run in a dirty engine will help clean and drain some grunge oil out.

3) Maybe you are just yanking my chain a bit? Oil is all the things we talk about here....but oil is not a cleaning agent. It simply isn't. Now will some oils actually clean better than others, sure. Will synthetic oil begin dissolving sludge and some crud? Sure, and it's one of the reasons I say never do an extended OCI the first synthetic change, but that is a relatively slow process in the sense of making an engine "spotless". Terry Dyson has said many times that motor oil really isn't a "cleaner" - in fact I have had his quote on my cleaning page for 5+ years: Pablo's Flushorama.

A mentioned, the problem with Auto-RX and synthetics is in the RINSE cycle. And then, the real big issue is Group-V Ester's competing with the Natural Ester Auto-RX. The truth is, you can use synthetic in both the clean and rinse cycle, you just have to really extend the interval to get the same effect if you used Dino in a shorter interval. The main reason why Dino is most important specifically in the rinse cycle is for fixing leaking seals.
