Draining oil to save for later?

Hopefully a quick question--

I recently switched one of my cars (bought used) from conventional to Amsoil's oil and EaO filter. It seems like a lot of people are suggesting using Auto-Rx before changing to synthetic to improve the life of the new oil. I think I may have jumped the gun and my engine could benefit from Auto-Rx. In less than 1k, it looks like I have lost about 1/5 quart. Would there be anything wrong with carefully draining the Amsoil into a clean 5-qt. jug, removing the filter, using the Auto-Rx treatment, and then replacing the original oil and filter? The oil's expensive (as you know) so I would like to save it as long as it's safe.
 
My highly sophisticated brain tells me that 1/5 quart in 1000 miles equals 1 full quart in 5000 miles; that's not much consumption at all in my opinion.

If someone were to offer me choice between a free case of dino + AutoRx, or a free case of Amsoil's best oil, the decision would be instantaneous.

You can do that if you want to (save drained oil) to perform an Auto-Rx treatment with dino. You can also just wait until you've gotten your money's worth out of the current fill and then do it. It all depends on your time table(s).

Auto-Rx should be done with dino.

I would honestly agree with the folks who are advocating leaving the Amsoil in there and getting your money's worth out of that. You can switch to dino for the Auto-RX after that. A quart every 5000 is not much.
 
What kind of car? Miles? Year? Driving style? Previous oils and OCI's?

Just leave the oil in or 5000-7000 miles, top up as necessary. I'm not big on the draining and saving thing. Too much chance of contamination. If the engine is really filthy, just do the AutoRx after the synthetic.

Well if he wanted to clean the engine, yes, the decision is instantaneous. Dino/Autorx.
 
Thanks for the help... I guess I'll just see how it plays out with the Amsoil in there.

Agree 100% with Pabs. I'd just leave it in and see how it goes. Nothing is going to go wrong with it.

If you don't want to use the Amsoil for the add oil, just use whatever you have in the stash and save the Amsoil if you have to use AutoRx.

Doesn't Amsoil full synthetic have some pretty stout detergents on its own? I would think that after 4 months of Amsoil, the engine would be spotless inside.

What about keeping the Amsoil and using LC20? Do they generally work well together to break down carbons? I probably don't NEED an Auto-Rx treatment as I have no symptoms... I just want my car to last a long, looooong time. Since I bought it I've been trying to do as much preventative maintenance as possible.
 
How about this for an idea...not so long ago, the Auto-RX instructions didn't require you to do the clean cycle on new oil. You basically waited until you were XXXX amount of miles from your oil change, add the Auto-RX to your existing oil, and just change the filter only. So what I am getting at is...wait until your current Amsoil is 2500 miles from your planned oil change...change your filter only, and add a bottle of Auto-RX to the existing oil. Then 2500 miles later, change the oil and filter and just use a conventional oil for the 3000 mile rinse cycle.

See there, I just solved your dilemma.

I think this is a good idea, but what about Auto-RX's compatibility/incompatibility with Group IV oil?
