Long story.....But my Subaru dealer did an engine oil change on my 24' outback with 2.5 L and put in 9 qts of oil instead of 4.5 qts by accident ....then drove it for 400 miles....another long story. Anyhow, Just curious When i got home I checked the oil....WAY overfull, so I dumped the oil myself....9 full quarts came out!
What damage could have been done in those 400 miles?

They've offered all my money back for all the work they just preformed ($2,600 ) But I'm still not happy, I want a deal on a new car that I can't refuse....They said they'd take care of me......The price they gave me on a new outback was a joke! The Same outback at another dealer exact same price!.....So much for taking care of me! Should I get Subaru involved?

P.W.

The car has 82,000 miles and I wanted all the fluids changed, front to back, spark plugs changed and carbon removal treatment and more

Well, here’s the whole story. I bout the car used with 81,000 miles on it and normally I do all my own work, but this time I got lazy and had the dealer to the work.
I had them preformed the 60K service, and changed ALL the fluids from front to back….plus did a carbon removal service. The first time they gave me back the car
They told me it might run rough for a while since they put the cleaner in the gas tank. I drove 20 miles and took it back stating something is wrong…..car ran rough And struggled to get up to speed. They thought it was something in the gas so they drove it for 400 miles, about a tank of gas and refueled and still not running correctly.
So, they pulled the new spar plugs that THEY just put in and found out the mechanic cracked the porcelain on 2 spark plugs….that was the whole problem with it all a long
Not running correctly….nothing to do with the gas or additive.
The second time I got the car back it, with the new spark plugs it ran fine …..but I thought I might want to change the engine oil again, but this time I would do it myself since they drove it all those miles
With it missing on two cylinders I was concerned about fuel delusion in the oil from the unburned gas. This is when I found out it had 9 quarts of oil in it!!! Now I’m concerned about long term damage now.

I doubt any damage would happen, and if it did, I would think pushing out seals would be the first place "damage" would happen. By pushing oil say into a corner or area that would form pressurize that area and push out the seal/seals. Other wise overfill oil would just kills HP and torque having the crank and big end of the rods slug through a high volume of oil. If you don't have oil leaking now, take the $2,600 and get a "seal warranty" for any leaking seal for the next 100,000 miles.

Take the $2600 and demand a 50K extended power train warranty. Or get them to put in writing they will repair any internal engine problem for the next 50K miles.

Is this a case of two people adding oil? Their oil fill hose with a non accurate gauge? No one checked the dipstick?

I'd guess adding oil when forgetting to drain the old, but your scenario is equally possible.

a dealer did this to a vehicle my brother owned, dealer service outside factory warranty. He didn’t catch it and the engine blew. They blamed him until he showed them the receipt. They made him a deal on a replacement. This was 20 years ago, and a different engine series.

In your case, you caught it and no damage seems to have happened. My only worry would be potential metal fatigue, perhaps to the backsides of pistons or conrods, but I really have no basis for real risk, if any.

Time to find a new Subaru dealer or independent garage to work with in the future. I left a local Subaru dealer for a lot less reason than that.

I think the most likely problem it may cause would be seal leaks from being overloaded. Look the motor over real good. If any leaks are found have the dealer fix them. Then take the money and an extended warranty.

If your engine didn't leak oil I would even stress it. This just happens to be your day of luck. Take the $2,600 and ask for an extended engine warranty. The way I looked at it they just did you a favor. Although it shouldn't happen mistakes do happen.
