We have/had two 2012's... Impreza and Outback. Also a 2000 Outback.
If you take the time to break the rings in, and do it right (Mid-throttle, '3rd' gear for a few seconds, coast, repeat a dozen or so times, immediately after purchase with a warmed-up engine), you won't have *any* oil burning problems.
I ran 0w-20 in the newer cars, and 10w-40 M1 in the 2000.
5,000 mile oil changes.
The two Outbacks were/are over 150,000 miles, and the Imp 65,000.
The 2012's are famous for burning oil, too.
