That is a very minimal amount of dirt. A degreaser pre-soak, followed by a pressure washer rinse, could have removed that before the wash. And would have saved you time.

Haha. 4 gallons of black-ness. How did I lose time? Why would I use a pressure washer? I don't even have one let alone room to use it

Pressure washing is more likely to add scratches if too close. I don't have room for one (store/use) anyways.

Pressure washing may cause paint to peel if used improperly, but it definitely will not add scratches. I would only use the white 40 degree tip.

That amount of dirt (quantity is debatable) tells me that you did not spend enough time pre-treating and/or pre-rinsing the vehicle before the wash, period.

There are times when pre-rinsing with a garden hose, alone, is not enough. Your example may be one.

I use the two bucket method with grit guards. The visible sediment at the bottom of the rinse bucket tells me that it’s not overrated.

Same, I also wash the bottom third of the vehicle and the wheels first. Then use a fresh bucket for the rest of the vehicle

Gold standard. 2 x 5 gallon buckets and a clean mitt. Launder after each use. Always done it that way.
