Sounds like a great game to play. Everyone take a drink, predict how close we are to the end of the world. Argue for a bit. Then everyone takes a drink, and repeat until someone breaks and blurts out "what the heck are we talking about? we're just blowing hot air with wild arse guessing".

Russia is giving all its got this spring. Dmitry Medvedev, the former president and Putin's right hand man said that if the war in Ukraine is lost, nuclear war will begin. Who gets nuked? Just the UA? The EU? The entire planet? That's why the clock is advancing forward.

"The loss of a nuclear power in a conventional war can provoke the outbreak of a nuclear war. Nuclear powers do not lose major conflicts on which their fate depends," - Medvedev

Certainly there would be people along the chain of command that will defy orders, but how many? It just takes a few loyal pilots to get the job done.

It would take 1% of Russia's stockpile to kill millions, irradiate the soil, set enough fires to pollute the atmosphere for years, basically destroying society.

In this article it states 100 nukes are enough to push us into the stone ages, or who ever is left. 1% of Russia's nuclear stock pile is 60, pretty close enough.

Something big is coming this spring with Russian troops building up in Belarus and a new mobilization of over 1MM+ soldiers (besides the 200K they already have thrown into the battlefield). 100K+ Russians are thought to have been killed so far.

This is Russia's do or die moment, because they won't have enough men to fight wars for them in the future.

After decades of self inflicted purges and throwing soldiers by the millions into wars, this negatively compounded their birth rate and todays military aged population.

So yeah, stock up on those iodine pills!

Darn, I left my 4th grade school desk at my last house when I moved. All those years of practice taking cover are wasted just when I need them.

If nuclear war occurs, the last thing I’m going to worry about is my thyroid. I don’t think I’ll want to be around to see that kind of world and suffering.

Also love the whole justification for escalation, as if ALL nuclear powers would consider first strike an option after losing a [special military operation] to a vastly inferior power, albeit it massive support from the west. I mean, I’m pretty sure we didn’t drop nukes on Korea or Vietnam on our way out. Only insane people would consider a loss in Ukraine an existential threat.

I think it’s just sabre-rattling to try and stave off further NATO expansion and western influence in former bloc nations. The west is too dumb to compromise and Russia is too insane to accept a compromise anyway.

Hope it's before tax day.

I recommend spending it on credit card debt, a small treat for you and the family, lead underwear and a Geiger Counter. If there’s any left over, a steel, poly, and concrete bomb shelter with independent filtered air and water sources. Ya know, the usual. Keep in mind that water makes a good shield, so try to build that into the design.
