It must be a store by store decision. One store near me would not accept any oil return once it left the store. A different one had no problem taking returns.

Nothing [censored] me off more, well almost nothing, than morally compromised cheap SOB's who purposely defraud a business and potentially other customers.

I had used some Amalie 75W-90 recently (3 weeks ago), and I was also surprised by it's very light / clear color. It also did not smell quite as strong as other gear lubes. Could be because it didn't have LS additives? It didn't seem right to me, given previous experience with gear lube, but it was in a sealed container(s), so I used it. Rear axle hasn't blown up yet, so I guess it is working?

Another vote for drama lama post of the week. Critical thinking is lost here.

Valvoline gear oil is light colored like some of yours also. I have some Schafer's gear oil that looks used when it is new.

Motor oils do the same thing. The same grades in different brands look different and flow like they are different viscosities.

Methinks OP is using one of these:

Drama? No critical thinking?.....you mean a title to grab peoples attention so people actually click on the post and read and comment......My lack of critical thinking apparently worked well, thanks. Btw I have worked in many diff fields including QC (quality control)....It wouldnt be much of a surprise if oil got bottled wrong or some other silly oops and no it did not have the smell of gear oil.

But anyways....I called STP and they gave me a number to the real company that makes the oil for STP....It is oil from "Plews-edelman".....They didnt pick up when I called, i'll call again in my free time just to see if it was a diff blend or supplier etc....I already flushed out that oil with better oil anyways.

In the era of relentless click-bait, drama-filled, OMG look at this! links that are out there, a simple title explaining the situation would suffice. I'll agree, the no critical-thinking jabs are unnecessary, but ignore those and move on-- you'll see many examples of semi-insults on this forum unfortunately. This forum is unique in that your new post will be featured on the recent topics column to the left of your screen-- no catchy titles needed, people WILL read and post.

Happy to hear you reached someone there and they pointed you in another direction. I've never heard of Plews-Edellman but it does appear that they blend some gear lubes and are not simply a redistributor. Thanks for that info. https://www.plews-edelmann.com/greases-and-oils/

I'm still of the opinion that STP buys from the cheapest supplier that meets the requisite standards and puts their label on it, and Plews-Edelmann is likely the latest contract to supply their gear lubes. I think the variation you witnessed is a supplier changeover and nothing more. STP lubes are akin to a store brand, you never know what you're going to get; at Autozone they replaced Autozone store brand oil, likely in an effort to bring more customers in via cheap oil with brand recognition. As your above post concurs, there are much better, more consistent lubes out there-- at a good price too if you're willing to shop around and/or wait for rebates/promotions.

That's not to say STP or store brand oil is inherently bad-- just that it lacks the consistency of the major brands. Warren, Amalie, a company in Missouri I can't remember the name of (JP something or other?), and many others make great oils/lubes for the store brands. You just have to decide how much reputation, consistency, warranty, etc. means to you, and if you're willing to gamble on any of the above to save a few dollars.
