I am an Oilgeek and I am still somewhat confused about all the new castrol syntec marketingspeak
how is the average joe going to understand this..
also their pricing is uh.. confusing.

see pic.

sorry for blurry cameraphone pic.. didnt notice it was blurred when I took it.

What exactly are the differences and for $1.60 wouldnt everyone just buy the "titanium"?

before it was syntec and edge...

now its edge with syntec and edge with titanium syntec power? or was that syntec with edge power..
blah!!

I just dont understand where they dug up these marketing genius? gold circle? Ames?

I think that is the point of this - if you can't convince them, confuse them.

As for pricing, since the newest product is supposed to be the best, it must have the highest price.

I don't understand it either... I hear radio ads for O'Reilly, Advance Auto, etc., and they'll mention the oil/filter combo and only say "Castrol Syntec", but never mention which one

Looks to me like all the "titanium" hoopla is nonsense, since if it was that much better, it would obviously cost more, don't you think? A buck difference between the 2? Come on...

Except they'll sell very little unless they lower the prices as long as Synpower, PP, and M1 are $25 or so, and Quaker State Ultimate Durability is $21.

They are cashing in on the past year of EDGE advertising and trickling it down to the newly renamed EDGE (with syntec). Confusion is the intent. BP does not get my business.

Just to clarify I'm not buying any either.

Esp I was going to pay full price for oil I'd definitely go 20.28$ for the 5qt Quaker State Synthetic.

I just dont see where they are going with the marketing.. Jack the prices way up and rename your whole line of oils.. I dont think dipstick jimmy was an effective promotion for the edge name.

REFORMULATED FOR EVEN BETTER PERFORMANCE: INTRODUCING CASTROL EDGE WITH SYNTEC POWER TECHNOLOGY.

For years, you’ve depended on the power of Castrol SYNTEC to outperform conventional motor oils. Now, we’ve reformulated SYNTEC to outperform even itself:
New, powerful dispersant molecule suspends particles to fight power-robbing deposits [2]
Improved formula continues to keep the engine running at peak power longer [1]
Castrol EDGE with SYNTEC Power Technology performs better than conventional oil in the toughest industry tests
Superior protection against deposits. Corrosive particles such as acid, soot and oxidized fuel fragments can cause costly damage to critical engine parts
Powerful Additive Package that neutralizes corrosive particles, preventing them from grouping together and forming deposits.
Neutralizes acids in your engine that can cause rust and corrosion on vital engine parts such as cylinders, bearings and hydraulic valve lifters
Meets the world's toughest industry gasoline engine protection requirements [3]
Provides Stability & Endurance under extreme conditions (heat, load, speed) that can cause conventional oils to break down
Delivers the ultimate performance under high-temperature conditions: unsurpassed protection against volatility burn-off and viscosity increase
Can be used with confidence in every gasoline engine passenger car, new or old, regardless of oil previously used [4]
Fully compatible with all conventional and synthetic oils

CASTROL HAS TAKEN EDGE TO THE NEXT LEVEL
For over 100 years, Castrol has been the technology leader in motor oil. In 2009, Castrol once again raised the bar for motor oil by launching a new, advanced synthetic called Castrol EDGE. Now, we proudly introduce our most advanced motor oil ever: Castrol EDGE with Titanium Fluid Strength Technology.

Why is it Castrol’s most advanced motor oil?
In extreme tests, Castrol EDGE with Titanium Fluid Strength Technology maintained maximum horsepower 60% longer than Castrol SYNTEC[1]
Power = strongest dispersants to fight power-robbing deposits
Performance = strongest oxidation control to provide longest wear protection
Protection = Lowest volatility for maximum performance during the entire drain interval
An advanced proprietary formula that provides performance and protection in extreme conditions such as towing, hauling, high and low temperatures, rapid acceleration and stop-and-go traffic [2]
Performance and protection that outperforms conventional, high mileage and synthetic blend motor oils
Exceeds the world’s toughest industry-agreed standards [3]
Fully compatible with all conventional and synthetic oils

I'm sure Castrol is a good product (and I used to use GTX as break-in oil when I'd assemble an engine), but sheesh. For the past few years they just KEEP finding ways to irritate me with their unclear product tiering and hideously annoying advertising.

Now, we proudly introduce our same old garden variety oil but with a new name in a spiffy new more colorful package.

So, they have these following:

Castrol EDGE w/Titanium
Castrol EDGE w/SYNTEC
Castrol SYNTEC (Which, BTW, has the catch phrase "Get the SYNTEC Edge" on their website.

)
Castrol SYNTEC Blend
Castro GTX Syn Blend
Castrol GTX High Mileage
Castrol GTX

There, problem solved.lol

What I don't get is this. Why would the better EDGE product contain "awesomness" from the lower quality oil? EDGE w/SYNTEC? Why not just call it EDGE?

I've seen the Castrol Edge in the Gold Jug....without Titanium in SM, GF-4, (that is supposed to exceed GF-5), on clearance at Kmart.

I found it in 2 locations on clearance and bought it all up on my trip to Florida. I picked up 4 Gallons of this Edge in the Gold Gallons that was covered with dust on the shelf on clearance for $14 each.

I've also seen the Castrol Syntec, black jugs, on clearance for $15 but I just left them on the shelf.

Instead of the Castrol Syntec, I loaded up with the M 1 Gallons in 5w30 and 10w30, SM, GF-4 for $12 and also for $14. I plan to blend this M 1 in a 50/50 mix with Mobil Delvac Super, 15w40, next summer, for some family and neighbors cars in Coney.

I wanted the Gold Castrol, without Titanium, in SM, to add to my stash of 5+ Quarts Jugs that I found on clearance at Walmart for $21.

That's probably what caused the demise of Pennzoil Ultra at Walmarts in Canada though, because for the longest time it was actually priced a buck lower (per 5L jug) than Platinum! So people here must have been confused as to which of the two oils was the flagship oil, and figured Platinum was better since it was priced higher and since it was only a small amount they didn't feel like it was overpriced. So it left Ultra out in the dark and nobody wanted it.

I predict the same thing might happen with one of these Castrol products too.

IMO, it's foolish for a major oil company to offer two different synthetic oil products, as the average consumer buying oil from Walmart just gets confused by the choices. For a smaller oil company like Amsoil or Redline though, they can get away with it easier since their customers are generally a lot more educated about the differences in oils.
