Don't Skimp on Timing Belt Job

The 3MZ-FE isn't an interference design. I would have just replaced the timing belt and the drive belts. If the water pump was not driven by the timing belt, I wouldn't have replace that.

Yeah, they say platinum spark plugs can go 100K, which they can, but with great loss of efficiency.

As for the water pump, I'm not sure where the difference lies if it timing belt driven or not? It is highly suggested to replace mine @ 100K when I replace the timing belt. Why pay for the labor again when it's right there? Otherwise you risk the chance of it going before the next 100K or 90K in a previously mentioned post.

For me, it's < $100 now instead of another $400-500 later.

I know of a lot of people who get 100k+ out of the platinum or iridium long life plugs and still get good mileage toward the end of the rated life.

Japanese water pumps (not your Chinese A1Cardone one) cost about $100-$150. If the pump is not driven by the timing belt and is driven by an accessory belt, it could be replaced in under an hour. Why spend the extra $150 and additional 1/2 hour labor at $100-$150/hr during the timing belt job if the pump is still okay?

My indy mechanic did the belt on my Lexus v6 interference engine at 90k and replaced all the gaskets & water pump & coolant flush with the belt. Should he have done anything else? He said there is a main seal in there that they replace at 180k plus all the other parts as well. FWIW he used a new water pump and not a re-man.

The gates website lists it as an interference design. I just bought a set of OEM denso plugs from the local Toyota dealer and they are going in this weekend ($10 each) But this mechanic insists on replacing the waterpump while he is in there. In fact he won't do the job otherwise as I questioned that and he has had several come back for water pumps and had to charge almost all the same labor to replace them. But he only charges 1/2 hour extra labor and the part while he does the belt.

My upcharge for the pump & labor was $120. Which seemed reasonable to me versus having to go back in if the pump failed. BTW I have 137k on the factory plugs and no change in mileage. The Haynes manual says 120k

Did you get part number T257?

I just checked it right now and it doesn't say anything about being an interference application. Neither does the RockAuto catalog.

The Gate's site sorta sucks. They lead you to believe that the link will say "no-not interference" or "yes, interference".

If it's not interference, it says nothing. If it is, somewhere on the page it will have INTERFERENCE in red.

I usually don't either, but the pickup I just bought has one. I had it in my head that the v-6 in this vehicle at a timing chain for some reason, but unfortunately it doesn't. I am lucky that my Corolla and Saturn both have TC's.

One reason it is not good to leave plugs in for 100k is they will seize in the cyl. head, esp. if the head is alum. alloy. Even if iron heads, use anti-seize and torque to spec. Too many over torque the new spark plugs with no gaskets, just to be sure.
