I have found what is causing all the grey crud in my engine. I have been mixing oils just to get rid of them I mixed 50% pennzoil 5w20 with Delo 15w40. The grey stuff was all over inside the oil filter and on the dipstick. I had some on the shelf mixed that has been sitting for about 2 weeks, I looked in the bottom of the oil jug and there was the same grey crud. Not good. I just want to warn everyone. Maybe it is ok but I am going to change out my oil asap.

Hmm....decanter the top oil off and send in a sample of the "still bottoms" (no, I don't really expect you to do this).

I haven't mixed these two oils ..but I've just added two quarts of Delvac 1300 15w-40 with PZ 10-30 (changed filters prematurely on rinse phase ARx). Still clean as a whistle ..so far anyway.

Don't mix Gin and Burbon either.

Well, let's see who has a spare quart of PZ and Delo ..maybe the experiment can be repeated ...and get different results. The water theory has merit. It would tend to dwell at the bottom of the jug.

Now all the free Delo that I got from my closing plant I put in gallon jugs that our amonia eating mutant nitrifying bacteria came in. Naturally I didn't get them totally dry before filling them. There was a very small amount of material that was "different" in the bottom of the jug ...but nothing like you describe.

Its not water, It is almost a grey black sludge. I will take a photo of the bottom of the oil container if i can figure out how to post them.

This was the jug that had the "mixed" oil in it? And the jug was pefectly clean before you added the 50/50 mix?

The grey sludge covered the entire bottom of two pennzoil bottles after they were mixed. I looked at two virgin pennzoil 5w20 and 10w30 bottles and no grey slime

It is things like this that has caused me to be a fanatic pick something and stick with it. On oil, it is Pennzoil dino.

I do not understand the fascination around here with mixing different oils. I've never done this other than something like using a quart of M1 15W-50 to thicken lighter weight M1. I've never mixed brands.

I think there are maybe 2 or 3 people here that could mix oils and come up with something better than either of the base oils. I know I'm not one of them...

I would say something "strange" is going on. For some precipitate to form there was a reaction. I'm sure some additives will react with each other, but this is most unusual.

My blend is doing no such thing,

I couldnt sleep, I changed out the oil to supertech 10w30, I am pulling an 10,000 pound camper this weeekend. I dont want no trouble.

I don't either . There are many oils that will do the job well on their own .

I think some of this mixing reverts back to the whole HDEO thing and using it in modern gassers . A car engine will stay no cleaner and will not last anylonger or show better oil analysis by brewing than for example just using Pennzoil 5w-30 and appropriate drain intervals if the maker calls for that grade .

Your grey oil sounds exactly like what happened to an old Nova I had. The engine block cracked internally and I ended up with grey oil. I hope that's not your problem.
