I would not read too much into such talk. It's just that the heart is a device in a system with no backup. You have other components that you can do without but not the heart. It gets the blame event though the real cause was something else. It's just that whatever the problem, if the heart stops, your screwed.

Stress, like from a serious injury, sends out hormones that can increase the blood's clotting tendency. It's amazing how flexible the body is. You can scare someone to death, if their system is already close to failure.
