I bought a Donaldson filter for my John Deere riding mower because I had read they use great media. The can is a little smaller diameter than the stock filter & other aftermarket replacements, & uses what looks like an O-ring instaed of a gasket. It's like $15 on Amazon, where the Champion product "Luber-finer" (PH3656) is around $5. I looked inside the Donaldson & the media is brown, looks like cellulose. The Luber-finer states "Micro-glass synthetic, Cellulose" media.

Is the Donaldson product (made in Indonesia for Donaldson) really worth the extra cost? Does it have the stellar media that other Donaldson sizes have?

Any thoughts on the Luber-finer? For $5 seems like a bargain!

Probably not worth it, I'd just get the Champ/Luber Finer filter & pocket the cash. Now to be honest I'm not up to par with their whole line so not sure what they're using other than your observations. Yellowish has seemed to be more of a cellulose media like you stated.

As long as the date is fairly fresh. I worry about hardened up media if cellulose. It seems this is compatible with the 4967 size unless there is no height room. I was just looking at and bought a Fram ph4967 for about $4. I never thought to go to a bargain filter but it looks pretty darn good. I will cut it open to see up close, unless Whip City does one. It was pretty fresh stock from Amazon, made in Sept.
This new ph4967 is shorter than the regular 4967 filters out there.

Here are the specs for the Donaldson P502024. What really sets Donaldson filters apart is not so much the filter media, but the heavy duty construction. They are made to withstand industrial/agriculture/construction type environments.

The Donaldson Blue line of filters are made with better filtration media and design, but I haven't seen them available in the smaller filters, like your application. Even for the Cummins 8.3 liter in my motor home, the Blue filters are only available for lubrication (motor oil) and coolant, but not for the fuel/water separator or fuel filter.

Interesting, I was pondering if Donaldson made smaller filters and you found one. Nice. I would gladly pay the extra $$ if they do eventually decide to cater to us plebs.

So is this filter trash? It seems like that's what @ZeeOSix is insinuating, but I'm daft and cannot tell from what I've read. TIA.
Efficiency of 50% at 20 microns (as pointed out by garageman402) isn't that great ... that's basically the bottom of the efficient scale for oil filters. That's all my reaction was about because I use efficiency to rate filters, but some don't. Otherwise, it could be a decently built oil filter ... which might make it a "higher tier" filter for some that don't care much about filtering efficiency (inside joke :)).

Gotcha. Thanks for the info!

I'm "really glad" I JUST bought one for my Deere riding mower :cautious:. The fleetguard cross reference search shall begin...unless there's a legit Donaldson that would also work? More research...always more research...

Sorry no teachable filter seeking skills for me. I found it here.

So what we have here is….. different sizes have different efficiency ratings. The P502024 that I saw is 50% @ 20microns. That’s terrible. As BC1 found out, the P551132 is 99% @ 17microns, an excellent filter.

My 2011 John Deere D100 specs the P502024, but a Fram XG3614 has the same base but is a bit longer so I routed the brake cable around it with convoluted tubing where it rubs the filter. I’ll take the 99+% @ 20 microns any day over 50%

Agreed. I don't know if the Deere Kohler/B&S engine needs and anti drainback valve or not, but that seemingly is the only "drawback" I can find (after ordering several) with the P551132 filter.

Just laid hands on my P502024. At first glance, I’m NOT impressed and am glad I ordered a few P551132’s above.
