Doing own oil changes under warranty?

Was oil level normal when this happened?
Of course hot shot service writer made assumptions before mechanic looked at the situation… my friend went down and was side by side with mechanic when they drained the oil. “Levels were where they should be” They would have sold an engine job to someone not so brite they should know a sti owner isn’t that dumb.

Each time the OLM (oil life monitor) is reset that data is either (or both) uploaded to the manufactures database for than VIN number and/or stored in the vehicles on board computer log. I'd rather have that electronic record over any paper receipts that I could make up.

You mean you take a picture of yourself while pouring in the oil, etc? Otherwise you could just take a picture of oil and a filter and skip the changing part. You could probably just shoot a video of yourself changing the oil and then just use the timestamp or just have the newspaper in the video.
wow ...

kind of hard on the poor guy and some think I am a forum bully? :ROFLMAO:
(joking with you )

How about this? Sorry I could hold the camera and pour the oil but its completely obvious what car and what oil and filter.

Not the complete set but enough that you get the idea. I do this to almost all my oil filter services and also many other services I perform on my own vehicles. It does help that I am ASE and current and can sign off on just about anything with my ASE number but even if I was JOE DIY average these pictures would be more then enough evidence of servicing.
The Magnetic drain plug is a Dimple which I recommend everyone should get one for both the engine and transmission pans.

Well it did sound like you were going a little overboard and I was just pointing out the flaw in your logic. You can always get a tripod to hold the camera while you're pouring the oil.

I just take mine to a local indy that reports to carfax so I automatically have a record of it being changed. But it's out of warranty so it doesn't even matter.

I think its taking too far to take pictures and all… look, they can always say those pictures are from different dates or that oil in the canister is not oil at all.
Dealer does not have hidden agenda to deny you warranty because car was maintained else where, if manufacture pays for it, they will do it, they dont care who maintained your car.

You would be foolish to think that oil change at the dealership will cover your engine no matter what. They can always pull a card that car was abused and etc, or that you failed to report a problem to them early enough.

Wow ! you think I didn't think about that. Some things just get overboard to document. And IMHO there was no "flaw in my logic". ;)

Ergo the Magnuson-Moss act is a crock. PLENTY of people here act like they are lawyers though, just like the Portsmouth naval prison was once filled with sea lawyers. Likewise a good relationship with dealer goes a long, long way another fact that is given no credit in this place.

However I have had two cases where doing everything at the dealership more than paid off. One of them was in the past week. The first was Hynda Elantra
Last week I brought my Venza to Toyota dealership for state inspection. I also said pleae check the brakes there’s a grinding sound all of a sudden. Service writer says sounds needs like break work. Again I said, I replaced both front and rear rotors and pads at your dealership 8,000 miles ago however it was June 2019, over the two years waranty period. I said OK, Covid, not driving much, but still new brakes only 8K miles ago and no wrench has ever touched this Venza but yours, since I bought the car new at this dealership. It turned out a caliper bolt had come off completely and was missing. Head tech was embarrassed, fixed it at no charge then checked every part of the brake system and all is fine. No charge.

The dealer can and will go to bat for you.

Or just make right their mistakes.

Good that they owned their mistakes. But not really going to bat for you as much as owning their mistakes.

My gf has a '19 Civic. I just save the receipts for all things bought (only oil & various filters so far). I wouldn't be surprised if the dealer can see each time we reset the OCI monitor & then match it (if we provided the dates and/or mileage) to maintenance done).

I keep a written log along with my receipts and I also document the oil changes and any other maintenance in the Ford and Subaru apps so it's duplicated if I lose the info from one place or the other. Sometimes I buy a few jugs of oil and filters at a time and if I buy for both vehicles I just use the self-checkout and ring up separately so I have a receipt for the materials for each vehicle specifically.
