Did my daily run to mcdonalds for breakfast and took the dog with me. Well when I got back home, I forgot I took the leash off, but still had it in my hand, so there I am holding a leash in my hand and the dog runs off 90 to nothing for the main road. Luckily both him and the car stopped before hitting him. I don't get why they run off like that though. He is part Australian shepherd, and I haven't found a dog that's faster than him. He's going to cost me a fortune one day if he gets hit by a car, they go after the owner for the damages. Every dog I ever know of lays on the couch all day and sleeps, not this one.

The first dog my Wife and I had together was an aussie. If she didn't get 3+ miles of good paced walking in a day, she'd chew everything in the house. A tennis ball thrower works well too. They are one busy dog, that's why our next dog was a mastiff.

Is there any aspect of your life that you don't want to start a thread on this forum about?

I didn’t have an Australian Shepherd, but I did have an Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler). The herding dogs have boundless energy and need a job.
One thing I did with my ACD was obstacle course type activities. One of his favorite things was chasing the frisbee and catching it in the air. I never could throw it to where he wouldn’t catch up to it and catch it!
He also went everywhere I did and enjoyed a good long hike. I never could get him to a point that he was tired, but I knew that he had to have something to do and he made a great exercise companion for me. 😉🍻

We had an Aussie as a kid. In the absence of any livestock to herd, that dog was the car chasing-ist dog I've ever known. Cars would slow down to come around a bend a ways down from our house and he would run out and nip at the tires as they accelerated past. He was fast enough to keep up with those cars quite a way. Once or twice he got conked on the head and got his bell rung good. He never learned his lesson, though, as his herding instinct was so strong. My folks finally wound up giving him to a retired couple with a big fenced yard.

My first Sheltie did the same thing. I purchased one of those remote control training/shock collars, turned it up to high, let him loose, commanded him to come, and when he didn't come I let him have it. I only had to do this twice. Shelties and Aussies are extremely smart and it doesn't take them long to figure-out that this is something that they don't want to experience.

Yes needs discipline
Yes needs a job
Yes needs exercise but should be able to calm himself

Try scent training and other things for mental stimulation. Search for Nate Schoemer on YouTube but watch others as well.

Those Aussies are working dogs. Never owned one but one of my GSD's was bred part working dog. She required a lot. Wanted to go at least three hours a day. Throwing a ball worked well. I would sit in a chair and throw. She brings it back and I throw again. She liked when I would bounce it off the roof. I would get bored doing it but not her.
I had her trained to hand signals. She enjoyed that.

Your dog requires you to put in time, effort and training. Talk to a trainer.

They are pretty frisky by nature. The Australian Shepherd that I encountered years ago would throw her paws into my lap as a way of greeting me. EVERY time. You would either have to brace yourself for impact or be hurt.

My dog does too. Heck of a bark too for a 25 pound dog. He's a mixture of like 5 different things, but is like 32 percent australian shephard
