Dog question

Has anyone tried those dog nail cutters that are like a battery operated grindstone? As opposed to the older style clippers. They are not cheap. I think $28 at Walmart if I remember. I am considering buying it and trying it out and will return if they do not work or dog hates it. Have a pair of Mastiffs that need shorter nails.

What about my air operated cut-off wheel?

I tried tying them to my bumper and having them run and wear down the nails. Unfortunately they pulled the car backwards down the street.

If youre dog freaks out at the sound of an electric motor near it then you will not be able to use it.

Do you have a Moto-tool? Try the round sandpaper roll or maybe even a sanding disk.

Less noise than the AO cut-off wheel.

I wouldn't try it myself because I've got a small dog and don't have a shark suit. For a big dog like yours it sounds like a good idea. They tend to tolerate that sort of thing pretty well.

We had one of those that was battery operated. I think it was a Dremel clone type thing. The dogs hated it. It made their toes vibrate. We still used it, but it took two people. one to hold the dog, and the other to grind the nail. I think it is better than those clippers that leave the nail all frayed.

You can get a Dremel type tool at Harbor freight for around $7. It comes with several sanding disks that might work.

My Rottwieler handles it perfectly. I haven't used the clippers since he was a puppy because of the size of his nails, they crack while you're trying to cut them so i resorted to using a dremel.

I lay him down on the side and have my wife keep him busy with treats while i grind down the nail and make it nice and smooth / round. Works like a charm and it's what the professionals use at the pet shop.

I'm still clipping them the old fashion way. With a clipper.
In one day of them running around in the yard they are nice and smooth.

We have a 100 lb black lab and a 70 lb blue tick coon hound/black lab mix. We looked into it a couple years ago, but didn't buy one because reviews said it took forever to get them grinded down using that tool. Plus our dogs would hate the vibration and sound of the electric motor. So I'm still cutting them every two weeks the old fashioned way, and it works fine for me. After the first walk around the block their nails are filed.

Both of our beagles are fine with nail grinding. Both will sit and lift their front paws up when we call them over to trim their nails. They'll stand and allow us to do the back legs as well.

There are plenty of ways to acclimate a dog to get them over the fear of a nail grinder. You just need to know how to properly work with and train them.

Growing up I had

2 English mastiffs (190lbs+ each)
1 Neopolitian mastiff
1 Bullmastiff
1 Rot

And I currently have a Cane Corso (Italian Mastiff) Shes super smart and an amazing dog. I pity the fool that attempts to break in!

just fyi a year ago a woman was in hospital and her large dog - possibly a mastiff - was put down 8? years old. Reason, she had always trimmed his nails, apparently inexpertly, he always tried to avoid it, and he finally snapped and attacked her severely. I think I read it in Whole Dog Journal. Conclusion was owners fault, if you can't do it well pay a little. Don't drive a wedge between you and your best friend. I just saw a sign at local independent pet supply place $6 nail trim on Tues. afternoon, they use a dremel tool. I may try it soon. Just a thought.

We tried it on our Sheltie when he was a pup, because I was scared to clip them. Of course he freaked out. We returned it, and bought manual clippers. He lets me clip them now, but expects a treat after every few clippings (greedy hound).

I tried those cutters you are talking about( couple different brands )and they were useless on my Lab.

dogs are the best people. i will take one, of them over most of the people i know.

I avoid clipping my dog's nails as much as possible and only clip the ones absolutely necessary.

Clipping, even with an expert doing it, can still be a traumatic experience for a dog.

If you trim a dog's nails too deeply, they can bleed and obviously hurt the dog as well. If you ever do this by accident, you can dip the injured nail in corn starch to stop the bleeding. They also make a powder you can buy for this.
