My 2 year old small female unfixed dog has been dragging its rear legs quite often now. I've read that it could be due to injury, but my dog is fine. It still jumps up and is very happy and playful all the time. i don't see any sign that it's injured.Any reason as to why it does this?

Absolutely.

That's an easy diagnosis - follow it around the lawn. If its worms, you'll know. Take care of it either way, the longer you wait, the higher the bill can get.

I would not trust any internet advice to diagnose your dogs problems. Go to a vet, the rural vets are usually cheaper but with less service.

It could be a lot of things, including a neurological problem(s). Most vets, including neurologist DVMs will perform a simple test - holding the dog still, they'll manually move one hind leg at a time to a stretched position and see how quickly the dog "responds" and returns their own leg to its normal position. What the "vet" is testing for is, basically, does the dog's brain *understand* where its legs are? If not, there's likely a neurology problem of sorts.

Is she "scooting" along the floor trying to rub her butt against the ground...I would say worms.

Our now departed cockapoo used to do that and they found worms.

Get to a vet. Could also be Lyme. My 4 yr old lab lost function in both rear legs for about 8 hours. Vet did all kinds of neurological tests but turned out to be Lyme. If test is negative and the problem persists with no solution, test again after a month. Sometimes doesn't show on initial test. I think the test is about $40 so not too bad. Good luck.

My cat was doing that one night and i got really scared because he is 20yo. Anyway turned out he ate something bad and had to go to the bathroom. Seriously take your dog to the vet asap.

Obviously, she should be taken to the vet.
As others have written, if she's rubbing her butt along the ground, she probably has parasites.
The vet will then precscribe a wormer flavored with something that dogs find really tasty, or at least our's did.
Take a stool sample to the vet if possible.
If not, the vet will use an instrument to get one.

$$$ is not an issue if you love your dog, parasites are bad for her.

is it dragging is arse on the ground? as if to wipe it butt? then it's more likely worms, in which case adding garlic to the food will deworm it and or the over the counter deworming products.

But if the rear legs will not move and it can't walk then that would be spine or hip issues. off to the vet you go.

I do agree that spending a small amount of money to treat a pet for worms is really no big deal. And we should do that. A couple hundred bucks is manageable for most of us. We should step up to the plate on that

Money CAN become an issue for many people. My mom and step father spent almost 8,000 dollars on their dog Jake before finally figuring out what was wrong with him. They were just about at the end of the road spending money on him trying to get him diagnosed and treated. Most people dont even have 8 grand at one time to spend on their car much less a pet they love. Unless you carry pet health insurance the bills become very substancial very quickly. And a great percentage of pet owners do not carry pet health insurance. Spending 10,000, 15,000 or more on a pet is really a luxury that a vast majority of people just cannot afford no matter how much they love their animals.

You don't sound very close to 'it'.

Get it checked out. I would buy a new dog before paying a bunch of money to get it fixed up. Spay the dog.

It could be something as simple as full anal glands. Your description of the issue leaves a lot to be desired. That being said, choosing to be responsible for a pet means that you choose to give it medical care when needed. Your dog looks to you for all of her needs-it's an unwritten agreement that you make when you choose to take on the responsibility of a pet.

If the only thing you're worried about is the $$$$!, then leave the pets to people who choose to properly care for them, and buy yourself an ant farm.

If it is worms, one of the OTC worm treatments available at most pet stores will likely work. One treatment worked great for our dog when he had tapeworm.

Otherwise, as others have said, get the dog to the vet ASAP. If money is an issue, you could apply for Care Credit. Most vets take it, and many purchases are interest free for 6 months. It's helped us out a few times. (we have 6 birds, 2 cats, and a dog) It can be used for human medical expenses too.

Its absolutely terrible the way vets rip people off down here in Florida. I am originally from PA and a vet there would be reasonable. Florida too many bank on the elderly holding dear their pets, since their mates passed or kids left and all they have is their pets. That and the irresistible behavior of the elderly to constantly visit the doctor and do the same with their pets. I had a cat with a urinal blockage and they wanted $700 to perform a catheter. It makes me sick. its such a ratchet.
