Okay, so just wondering if there would be any benefits, like say cleaning engine better, when topping off with Pennzoil Platinum, or any synth oil, before the oil change? Would it help the engine last longer, absorb more impurities or sludge, etc...

just wondering what the oil gurus think.

No! What would give you that idea? It takes time for oil to "clean". Doubt the lasting longer bit. Oil doesn't absorb impurities. Click on the main page and read the links on the main menue. Careful about the info in oil 101 though, take it with a grain of salt. What makes you think your engine is dirty?

Topping what off with PP? What car? What engine?

Do you have mineral oil there now?

In any case, I'd say it'll make little difference.

It would act like an additional additive. Something similar to the effect of Marvel Mystery Oil. So you should see a quicker darkening (or additional darkening) of the engine oil. I used Rotella 15w40 as top offs on my GF's Mazda to aid in cleaning it. The cleaning was satisfactory and I was pleased.

This was over the last 1k miles of the oil change though.

No different than topping off with mineral oil though. Both will have comparable amounts of add pack in it, IMO, and not enough to make a noticeable difference.

I would like to add this,, a polyol or a diester base lube will have cleaning properties. Add a qt with the other oil instead of all dino oil"Replace 1 qt with a proper base oil syn" when you do an oil change and there will be some cleaning. At work I put some used Redline oil in the air compressor on the company work van ,the sight glass was all cruded up and the redline dissolved the crud in a few weeks.

unless you have a serious consumption issue, youre talking PPM, i had and oldsmobile that used 1/2 quart every 3k, i used cubcadet hydrostatic fluid to top it off, didnt have the mower anymore had several quarts left over, never a problem! on a side note, i wasnt in love w the car

Think of it this way......pour a 12oz beer in a gallon of water, then you drink it, anychance youll feel anything?

After drinking a gallon+ water/beer? Yes! I would feel something...a great need to immediately relieve myself.
