This is the filter I had always used Yrs ago on my pathfinder. Now Im using Pure 1 (5.99) on a 00 dakota, I may hafta switch to somthing else like the tough gaurds if Pep-boys keeps removing their pure ones from the shelves.

Screen-over by-pass valve* that provides backup filtration during cold start-ups and added protection against larger particles of dirt.

Combination synthetic glass and cellulose media formulated for top-rated efficiency (99% multi-pass) for the life of the filter.

Silicone anti-drainback valve designed to allow filter to retain oil when the engine is off and benefit from a full filter at start-up.

I dont know any other filter that competes with pure 1 in price and filtration,Quiality except for napa golds which are praised here. Tough guards may be my next options, but maybe not. The thought of cardboard end caps keeps bothering me.

The endcaps have never proven to be a problem. In fact a year ago I cut open a FRAM PH8A that had over 15K miles on it with Chevron Supreme 10w-30. This delivery van went almost 8 months before it was changed. This van was WAY overdue for an oil change to say the least. The endcaps were in great shape as well as the media. No blown media through the holes and the ADBV was still soft.

Besides the price, I believe them to be good filters. Too bad there's cheaper filters with better features.

Fram filters will most likley do just fine. But why pay that much for a cheap made filter.

Does anybdy have an idea how much they have into 1 filter. Probably not very much.

There making a killing off people who don't know any better. I would never give them my money for anything they make.

There is better quality stuff at a much more reasonable price.

Use them if you like but at your own risk.

Isn't the real problem with the Fram oil filters with the cardboard end is the ADBV doesn't really seal that good against them thus causing "dry" starts

? All I know is the Extra Guard oil filter caused very painful start-up noises in my 1989 F-150 with the 300 L-6 engine compared to quiet starts with the Motorcraft FL1A. The regular price of the Fram Extra Guard is comparable to the Motorcraft equivalent so why use Fram

The silicone ADBV in the TG should seal better than the nitrile one in the EG, even with the cardboard endcaps, no?

The original poster didn't say what vehicle the filter would be used on. If it's a Ford, then I'd definitely recommend the Motorcraft over the Fram every single time, with zero exceptions.

cardboard end-caps? I normally use Baldwin, however, the parts store didn't have one today so I just got a Hastings. I had to go to WMart for some other things, so while I was there I was reading the TG box and it seemed up to todays standard. If you guys give me the OK, I may try one next oil change!

I just cut one open last night for fun. It is exactly like the Extra Guard. It has carboard endcaps but also has a screen over the bypass valve. It also has a silicone ADBV and that PTFE gasket. It really didn't look all that bad and I'm sure it would work just fine. Unfortunatly, they charge almost $5 at Walmart for one (at least when I bought it a while ago.) That's kind of high considering.

No. Changing the material does not affect the shape or design. Silicone will only prevent it from hardening.
