Does operating temperature heat burn off...

And if the moisture/water is getting into the oil due to short trips (engine never fully warming up) then a long drive might get rid of the moisture. But if it is due to a coolant leak, then it's going to be continuously introduced to the oil and no amount of driving will eradicate it.

Same thing applies to (at least some types of) fuel dilution too, right? If the engine is putting fuel into the oil then driving it may "burn off" the fuel but new fuel is always going back in.

That was not my experience with the Mercedes diesels we had in the past.
On a morning cold enough to be on the cusp of not starting at all if left sitting out all night, around 4F, you could run the glow plugs and start the engine and after ten or fifteen minutes idling, the coolant temp needle would be well off the peg and you'd have actual heat in the car.

yes, it might take an full hour to get up to temp while idling, but it does get there.

But the cooling system in Shannows ute will be different. belt driven fan etcwhich is always shedding some heat from the block.

The old Benz diesels had what was misnamed a hand throttle. These engines had fully mechanical injection systems and were unthrottled, so all the driver controlled was mixture. It was often necessary to use the loud pedal to richen the mixture and get a start in very cold conditions. Why truckers like to idle their engines is beyond me since once a diesel has been run and warmed up, it's very easy to restart.
With any engine, increasing engine speed greatly reduces warm-up time.
If I follow BMW's direction and run my old 318i up to operating temperature once a month during winter storage, it would take about forever at idle.
At 2000 revs sitting outside the garage, it takes only a matter of minutes.
