Ultra hasn't been out that long, should be at least SM, shake well and good to go. Is that $15/gal, 3.75$/qt? I'd want seal on the jugs.

The oil itself does not degrade or break down, but the jug does, I have seen some pretty yellow thin plastic jugs at K-mart before that were SL, it felt to me like the plastic was being eaten away by the oil.

I have seen UOA's on here from oil that was 10 years old and it still produced a stellar wear pattern.

I'm using oil in my cars that have copyright 2004 on the bottles. my engines haven't died yet.

Likewise. GC from '04/'05, PZ dino, even some Chevron blue-bottle that was all the rage back in the SL days here.

My kids can use it in their cars with confidence years from now.

6 gallons Pennzoil Ultra for $15 is 62 cents a quart, I would buy every jug they have.

The shelf life of oil can probably be measured in decades.
In some Blackstone VOAs of really old oil, additive separation was not an issue.
I'd have no problem with buying the first gallon of Ultra produced, and it isn't that old anyway.
I try not to let oil in the stash reach ten years, and I don't have any that old at the moment, I don't think.

Oil doesn't have a shelf life, but the additives do. I would bet that oil isn't much more than 4 or 5 years old, which is completely safe. If you must use OLD oil though, use it for a short OCI, due to additive loss.

Yes. What matters most is the temperature exposure. If it is kept at around 75F then it should last for years depending on some of the additives.

However, if it is kept in a garage and gets prolonged temperature exposure below freezing it will cause gel formation. The colder and longer the worse the gelation.

I still have oils from the late 80's and early 90's that I still use now and then. I did a UOA of over 18 year old oils that was stored in Minnesota, Iowa, Arizona, and Texas and it looks like new oil. Oil shelf life is the same as 3K OCI. How safe do you want to be and how much money do you want to waste?

If you read the oil company sites, you will find the shelf life of engine oil varies according to the type of oil. Fully synthetic oil lasts longer than dino oil and Mobil 1 quote 5 years in comparison to 3 for Castrol GTX. Oddly enough it does not matter if the bottle is opened, but the storage conditions do matter and keeping the oil in a cool place that does not vary much in temperature terms helps.
If you do want to use old oil always pour it into a clear glass container and check for sediment and signs of cloudiness as the additives can settle out or if the cap was not a good seal the oil may have absorbed moisture.

If it is a good quality pcmo you are asking about, yes. And it will cost you a lot of money to dispose of. Please send it to me and I will dispose of it properly! If its any of the lesser brands that is labels as top off oil only, no shelf life. You can keep it for decades and it won't get any worse.

No $15.00 a jug for the ultra not all 6 jugs for 15 bucks. I was worryed about the jugs because they are lighter looking. b ut the oil should be fine. 4 jugs came from a store that went out of bussiness and they were in the window where the sun hit them all day.

Wish I could find the Pennzoil synth Group III+ formula that was sold for only a short time.

Are you talking about Pennzoil Platinum that had EOP as the base stock? Try looking at mom/pop store I seen some old stock on those selves. I bet there is a hoarder on here that has some. Maybe you could work out a trade?

Whoa!!!! I still got about five cases of Pennzoil Platinum during the $1/qt after rebate at Autozone. Are you telling me that it is better than Pennzoil Ultra?
