Do lawn mowers sound different when you run them with no oil? I have a customer that recently moved here and he tells me his mower is broken and doesn't know what's wrong with it. He said I could have the mower if I wanted, so I said sure. I got it to the end of the driveway and gave it a pull. The engine had no compression at all, so I figured it was either a busted valve or a thrown rod. Well I pulled the dipstick and it was empty, which reminded me that the moving people drain the oil out before they put it on the truck, why I have no idea so I assumed it busted the connecting rod off which was why the engine was free spinning. My question is wouldn't the engine be super loud with no oil? I didn't see any hole in the block, but maybe it let go at the right time to not put a hole, although mower engines only run at about 3200rpm. I was going to tell the customer what probably happened, but I didn't have much time to spare, and normally something like that turns into a long winded conversation.

Fill it. Run it. If the oil doesn't leak out, it's just got a somewhat shorter life. Enjoy inexpensive mowing!

It threw a rod. Not going to start. lol I rolled it back up the driveway and left it there. I have too many free mowers already taking up space.

It may have compression release that makes it feel like it has no compression.

Usually when they're ran without oil they're seized up and not easy to pull.

You figured this out in the 26 minutes since you made the first post that made absolutely no sense? Wanting to know how the engine that you gave a pull should sound if you actually got it to run? Thankfully for this 'customer' you didn't get into a long winded discussion.

I was trying to figure out how the guy kept running it and didn't shut it off wondering what was wrong. I already diagnosed it and assumed the connecting rod broke off since their was no oil in it and the engine was just free spinning with very little resistance.

I decided it wasn't worth messing with since I already have enough mowers sitting around taking up space.
