Hi guys ...
I have Mercedes 2001 E430 138xxx miles ...its a M113 V8 engine owned about a 1.5 years
Mercedes specs requred 0w40 or 5w40 ... 229.5
Previous owner seems like neglected oil change..due the deposits on valve covers ..and seem like conventional oil was used ...
Can I use 10w40 in this kind engine? I heard think oil is going to help ... because engine is getting wear and opens tolerance between parts... and thick oil such as Castrol 10w40 will help ....
So should I keep use 5w40 or better stick to 10w40...??????
And I have oil consumption..about 1qt per 3000 miles

0W40 and 5W40 will be better for cold winter starts than 10W40, at operating temps all three are 40 grade oils. I see you're from NY, depending on where it can get quite cold in NY. I'd pass on the 10W40 during the winter.

Your oil consumption seems fine.

Thank you...very much...
Well summer is coming ..maybe I can use 10w40 for now

Summer it should be fine, although I would prefer an oil meeting the MB spec it calls for.

Even of engine is wearing off ? Some say old engine has blow by .. piston ring wearing off... too...
Thanks anyway

I would stay with a 229.5 oil. Your oil consumption seems fine. Also will probably help keeping it clean better than some unknown 10W40...depending on what 10W40 you put, but most aren't the best oil there is.
10W40 is just thicker then cold, probably won't make much of a difference on consumption.

Actually, in the summer, it is not thicker, and it makes no difference.

If your vehicle runs in temperatures above 15F it will make no difference if you use 0,5 or 10w and being you use 1 qt per 3k miles I would use the 10/40 without thinking twice.

In answering your question, it does help if you state what the outdoor wintertime temps are, NY is a big state and winter temps can be as low as -25F upstate to never lower then +15F on Long Island.

If I was you, in warmer whether above 40F I would use a 15/40 or hot weather 20/50 to cut oil consumption.
Use any brand that you want in conventional buy best price as all the oils of the same rating are equal.

How do you drive the car? I would not run a conventional A3 10w40. Forget oil grade. Look to the MB 229.5 in an import synthetic. like FUCHS or PENTOSIN. 0w not needed. This is intended for extreme cold pumpability - not 20 below zero. Multigrade 0W- just move the gelation and wax point down 5 degress vs. 5W-.

Typically the reason most would avoid a 10w-40 is because it will have few or no manufacturer approvals and thus use cheaper base stocks and may be more volatile, despite the narrower spread.

I'd use an approved lubricant in 0w-40 or 5w-40.

Use it as long as it is SYNTHETIC

I think Royal Purple and Castrol Edge still makes 10W40 synthetic.

For this one, Mobil 1 0W-40. On the MB-Approved 229.5 list, easy to find, and relatively cheap.

A common 10W-40 isn't likely to meet the wear and longevity specs.

Well my engine don't like Mobil1 ... 0w40 .. It's evaporation jsut crazy... and it's sounding loud and not as smooth as Castrol 10w40 ... I used few month ago Castrol HM and it's was best ..
Honestly not just my engine don't like Mobil 1 but I am too ...
It had 1qt per 800 miles consumption with Mobil 1 0w40
