Dodging bullets made of hardened horror stories

I'm not particularly loyal to any one brand. I have 3 vehicles here and they all currently have different brands of oil in them. I have a shelf full of SOPUS products because they were on clearance at AZ and some Valvoline because it was on rollback at Walmart and I had a $5 off coupon.

I have a friend who is always trying to peddle Amsoil. I told him when he can sell me some for $2 a quart I'll buy it.

Good buddy of mine owns a heavy construction business. Up 50 ton crane service, pile driving, etc. Lots of big mean equipment with big crankcases. He started buying into the AmsOil thing and built some spreadsheets to look at extending service intervals, etc.

Changed the oil in the dry sump and the primary on his Harley to AmsOil and rode to my house. Motor was sounding like a can of marbles and he was shaking his head. Said he followed their recommendations. Summer and about 95* out with some good hells in between.

We dropped that oil, and filled with my small stash of GTX 20W-50 and he went home. Called the next day and said engine sounded normal. Did not like the clutch action, so was changing that now. Put Harley oil in there and still in there two years later. Much easier to shift and quieter.

I have no personal experience with AmsOil. I have friends that swear by it. But that guy (Chris) will never put AmsOil in anything again. I doubt it ws the oil - it was wrong recommendation/application. But they lost a potential volume customer on that deal.

Jeez, I have four of the bigger refineries within a hours drive. I can get Chevron rep or a Redline rep on the phone easy and onsite in a day, two at most. Never had a lube related failure from either line that includes antique water mills exposed gear lubes to blown nitro motor rails. And NEVER a bad recommendation.

Does that make me a fan boy - no. I do use their stuff if the price is close. But I've gotten really good service from Mobil products and from Ashland too

Plenty good choice, just do your homework ...

I currently use Amsoil, well known as very good stuff. Started while extending OCIs in 2004-5 due to the large amount of highway driving we were doing. However the combination of MLM and hiding their new formulations will probably push me away by the time I use up my remaining stash.

Prior to that it was Valvoline conventional at 5k.

Looking forward it may be Redline, it may be Schaeffer (thanks to TiredTrucker's testimonials), or it may be back to Valvoline. M1 is also a possibility.

I know I DON'T like Pennzoil or Quaker State products. Despite them being good oils today, I have a (illogical) prejudice against them based on past experience.

Darn edit time out....

Agree both with Astro - ALWAYS start the vehicle and check for leaks.

And benjy - Amsoil used to be PAO/ester but is no longer. Sure they dropped the price some, but the OE is the same as any other blend on the market today, and the SS which, IMO should still be a PAO/ester, is now just a blend with a good additive pack

Not another reply or input from the OP, yet he got 18 fish on his hook....

Is there some magical AmSoil KoolAid tap somewhere people drink from?

I credit the Castrol GTX 20w50 conventional this was circa 1980, I was using to minimize the the effects of a catastrophic overheat in a Datsun 1.6 Sohc I4. A darn fine little engine.
