So the truck I plan on buying . 97 ram. 2wd half ton. My buddy who owns it said every once in awhile when its real cold freezing or below and the truck is cold when taking off to go up a hill it'll Rev a little before it grabs . It'll only do of once. If you take off in first on the shift lever and manually shift it wont do it. It only does it once in awhile. He said about 3 times in the last 6 months. The fluid is clean and the filter is only 10-15,000 old. Any one have any idea please help.

change the atf oil and filter and use an oem filter and do it now sometimes the filter filters too good and it starves for oil when really cold and thick
I would either look for another truck to buy OR see if the owner will deduct the cost of a rebuild on the transmission from the cost of the truck.
Sounds to me like it is the beginnings of transmission woes.

Maybe a dealer could pull the transmission codes?
After my Chrysler transmission was rebuilt last year, I had some "slipping" like issues that turned out to be the throttle position sensor. The bad sensor up on the engine somehow triggered the transmission to speed up in a way that felt like slipping. This sensor is located on the intake, nowhere near the transmission. Sometimes we make assumptions and put on "blinders" regarding other possibilities.
EDIT: Some transmission codes cannot be pulled by the regular OBDII and require dealer specific computers.

No codes of any kind. Its done it for the last 6months but about 2 yes ago did it one time and never did it again. Its running bg fluid
I wouldn't be mad at him. I'd be bummed but he doesn't know why it does it either. Im leaning towards the filter or the check valve in the cooler line the transmission fluid looks almost like new .

Where are those even at? Why replace them
These parts may be the cause of the transmission not acting correctly. Of course, along with the proper ATF + 4
They may be inside the transmission pan or on top/side of the transmission itself. A repair manual may help with their location

Change out the fluid with fresh ATF+4, and a bottle or two of Lubegard red, and I'd say that's all you can really do. Hopefully it lasts a long time.
Could the bg fluid be causing this? I've heard these trans are picky. I'm just worried about buying it and it going out.

Using a non-specc'ed fluid in a known picky transmission? Certainly possible. With the exception of Amsoil and Redline ATFs, I would always personally use the spec'ced fluid in any transmission. In this case, ATF+4, and some LG Red.
